I didn't title this as part of my backstory because Russia is not only my history but its a part of me. Russia stole my heart from day one. It is the most beautiful and interesting country that I have had the privilege of visiting. From the architecture to the food, to the people, Russia is the place to be.
When you first arrive in Russia, the people look mean and unwelcoming. They do not smile, and they do not speak. They just look at you. This is their way of sizing you up and trying to figure you out. It's a throwback from their communist era. Even though Russia is not a communist country (anymore), it is communist in culture. From the way they greet each other, to business to everyday life, Russia is hardcore communist.
As soon as you gather your luggage and head to the exit of the airport, the scammers are waiting on you. Best to have a pre-arranged taxi, cell phone service and a place to stay before landing. A place to stay is a must before arriving in Russia. You need to have an invitation from either a friend in Russia, your employer or hotel to get a visa. Nobody is allowed to enter Russia without permission; not even Russian citizens living outside of Russia.
If you have not pre-arranged a taxi or downloaded the app Tap Taxi, you are fucked. Taxi drivers that are located at the airports intentionally inflate the cost from the airport to your destination. Be smart and download Tap Taxi or have somebody at the airport waiting for you. Next step, getting around. Depending on the city you can just walk most places. But during the winter I highly recommend using a taxi. It's not safe to be outside for more than 15 minutes during the harsh winter months. It also helps if you know a little survival Russian. Not all the taxi drivers are honest, and the majority of them smell very bad. Deordant is not widely used in Russia.
Overall, life is Russia was AWESOME! We lived in a city called Kazan located in the Republic of Tatarstan and worked for a private international school. The local sites, the warm people (Russians warm up to you after they get to know you) and the flights from Kazan to anywhere in Europe were dirt cheap. We flew to London for under a 1000 dollars.
We were able to meet the President of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov. His son attended our prestigious establishment. We (the foreign teachers and spouses) were so well regarded that the parents threw us a lavish dinner fit for a Russian King. The feast also came with a private Russian opera performance and Russian dancers.
The school we worked for also through a lovely party for Women's day. Women's Day is a holiday to celebrate all the accomplishments of women. The end of year party was also nice.
Another unique experience we had was we worked with a TON of ex KGB agents. Most of the security staff once worked for the KGB, and some of them were once Russian cops. The environment made for interesting conversation and stories from their communist past.
If you ever get a chance visit Russia. It is an amazing country with lots to offer.
You have taken some great photos!
