RuneScape: How you can make a living playing a game.

in runescape •  8 years ago  (edited)

RuneScape is a fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Jagex, released originally in January 2001, and though many changes have taken place, is still popular to this day.

Now, I know you're probably thinking "oh another one of these "get paid" lies". While not everyone can make a living by playing RuneScape, there are quite a few people who do. There are various ways you can go about doing this, all of which require you to dedicate some time to the game, so if you're not a fan of MMORPGs then this probably isn't for you.

Streaming.
Probably the most simplistic way to go about this is to be a live streamer. People love to watch and support streamers either via donations over PayPal or by donating items in-game. Streaming RuneScape can be fickle, but if you work your account up into a way that allows you to go PKing (player killing) or to do higher end bosses, then you will definitely have viewers. Now, streaming isn't for everyone. If you're a person that has a hard time finding what to say in order to keep people listening to you and enjoying what they hear and see, then streaming might just be a waste of time.

YouTube.
There are a plethora of different types of RuneScape videos you can make ranging from guides on various activities or skills, PK (player killing) commentaries, boss logs, to even coming up with creative games to play with random Scapers. YouTube will pay you money based on your views and how many of those views saw the advertisements. So if you can get even a small-time channel up and rolling, you'll easily be able to make a living as long as you keep pumping out those videos.

Gold Selling.
This one is against the game's rules, but that doesn't seem to stop people. There are sites like Player Auctions that allow you to trade in-game items from various games to other people who are willing to pay $ for them. If you can make money successfully in-game to the point that you can afford to get rid of gold without stopping yourself from making more then you can always just get rich in-game, and turn it into real money. A lot of people do this by breaking real-world laws by stealing items from others/stealing their accounts. DO NOT DO THIS, it is illegal and you can get in real trouble for it. Another way that people do this is by high risk PKing (player killing) or by wagering large sums of gold in fights at the duel arena. If you played your cards right this could make you a lot of money.

If after reading this you're thinking "Man, I've got to play this game!" then good! This game can create real opportunities, just remember that at the end of the day it is a game though, and that you should have fun doing it otherwise you're just wasting your time doing something you don't like in order to try and make money. In that case, you'd be better off getting a real job!

I just remember my younger days when I used to play conqueronline. Majority of the time spent in the was selling items, gems and even character. This game happen to be a huge industry in the city where I lived.

I just remember when Im selling good items and at the end of the transaction people suddenly robbed us. That was my onset to stop playing mmorpg.

In RuneScape you can't actually get robbed, the only areas you can PK are designated as PVP Worlds, or in the Wilderness which even the wilderness has a border that warns you before you go out.

Im talking about real robbery in person, where after we traded the items, knives started to come out :)

Holy crap! Are you kidding me?! Haha wow that is insane, I had a friend that pretended to be interested in the game. When I showed him the game he watched me type my password and took like 1.5mil off my account... haha nothing nowadays but back then it was my life's savings.

Yeah, we could have avoided it if we didn't let ourselves lured to their nest. That's the problem about the trusting, because in the world of gaming, only few people can be trusted.

So many times I found myself falling into ploys of deception and trickery. MMOs were the pinnacle of my frustration. Although I did happen upon much pleasure from the games I played a lot of them brought me fury and discontent.

Just play it for pleasure but dont make it a habit.

That is the point that I had to come to in order to make gaming more of a fun thing rather then a work thing. The biggest thing to me about making Real Life money from virtual games is that it takes the fun out of the games. You have to focus on the parts that increase profits and not really have fun in most cases.

Now that I am older, the few games I play are simple and easy enough to play that they are fun for me. If I ever went back to making money from gaming then I would probably not be so serious about it.
