Why am I running in a cowboy hat?

I thought I might want to answer this question more than once, so I thought I would post it here.

The hat which I have been enjoying on my runs, was purchased to show support for a running hero of mine, David Proctor. (you can read a CBC article about him here.

The hat is built by Smithbilt Hats of Calgary. They supply the famous 'white hats' to Calgary's visiting dignitaries.

Back to Mr. Proctor, he lives and trains in Alberta, mostly. I started following him via his instagram and strava feeds. His training is hilariously large (as it has to be)

I've had my hat since my 5k run on April 29th. I've run 6 out of the 7 days since I've had it, and have accumulated almost 50km under it.

Mr. Proctor, every day of his cross-Canada effort, plans to run over double that.

I just checked strava. His last training run was more than my whole week...not to mention at a faster pace!

I can't wait to see how much he beats me by, once he starts running. June 27, 2018 he begins in Victoria, on the West coast of Canada, and will run 7200kms to St. John's Newfoundland.

He is trying to beat a record set by an ultra-marathon legend, Al Howie. Mr. Howie set the record, crossing Canada (according to the wikipedia article):
"7295.5 km in the record time of 72 days, 10 hours and 23 minutes"

To support Mr. Proctor, you can order a technical tee, or just throw money at him (I don't know if he knows about steem), but one of their stated goals is to get more followers to his facebook/instagram accounts. During Mr. Proctors run, people can go run with him. Of course, it is up to you to set up any support, and to keep up!

Geography will not favour me running with him during his effort, so I'll settle for running his hat around a bit.

That certainly adds some wind resistance, so it’s probably a great training aid!

I just went out for 10k, in 50km wind gusts, so I guess that is high-intensity training :)

You’re lucky to still have that hat!
