Running Update
For the next big thing, scroll down, I am starting with an update on my latest runs.
A different angle from a new running place, in the distance you can see the course we usually run during our lunchbreak
Now that my runs for the #fiftyrunstillmay challenge are completed, I don't want to waste too much time reporting on my runs, but obviously I haven't stopped.
Last Sunday I was feeling awful, but despite how I felt, I still went out for a run with my neighboor. It was a poor time as we set the pace with me coughing a lot in the beginning. However we still did close to 12 kilometers and that without taking a break or a moment to catch my breath.
Sundays run, just to tell you how pawly I was, 12 did the 12 kilometers in 1 hour and 13 minutes, which is slow for us, but my Training Effect was 4,7 = Overreaching, which is one of the highest scores I've had so far
As I had to babysit my kids yesterday, I didn't have an opportunity to go for a run, like I'd do normally on Tuesdays, so I went today. To my luck it was a good decision as the weather was fantastic. It was the warmest I've had during a run since October or November, I guess. Below you can see the stats from my Garmin Fenix 3 and the pictures are also taken during todays run.
What an improvement from Sunday. I felt good and the weather was in my favour.
A familiar castle from a different angle, I am trying to change my route bit by bit to keep it interesting and to stop routine from setting in
As I'm increasing my distances slowly, I am also looking for new additions to my existing route
For those of you who want to connect with me on Garmin, you can do so by following this link.
My next big thing!
Now for my next project. I have been considering my options to figure what to do next. It has always been a "dream", if I'd ever get fit enough to do a Marathon and preferably before I'm 40. Well, I'm going to be 40 next year in October, so I figured it's now or never ...
I'm going to run a Marathon
At least I'm going to try it. My goal is to participate and finish it. I would like to hear from you, which Marathon you think I should participate in. The options are:
- Berlin 2019
- Rotterdam 2019
- Tel-Aviv 2019
- Lisbon 2019
- London 2019
I respect the opinions of my fellow runners even more, so if you have experience with running a marathon or specifically any of the above, I'd really appreciate your feedback.
Another think I'd like to know is how did you prepare, do you have a training schedule I can learn from, do you have any advice? Anything you think that could help me would be appreciated. I want to start my training in May, to give myself plenty of time and I will also submit myself to some tests by my GP, to see if I'm bodily fit to do such a thing.
I'll need your support now, more than ever, so I look forward to your comments and feedback ... or maybe you want to talk me out of this 'stupid idea' 😉
Let me hear from you, I'm going to need it all now and I appreciate the truth over some false encouraging words.
Thanks,
Doron

It's quite fascinating to read of you running, even though I haven't see you, but I believe we can achieve whatever we set our hearts to achieve, I look forward to seeing maybe a video of you during the race at Berlin, so I'll say you pick Berlin

Oh no, I'm only going to try once, but thanks for the encouragement! Any advice from a doctor?

You should definitely see your doctor first for the heart examination.Hydration and nutrition are very important for the success of your training runs and race. You should drink water or a sports drink while running, especially when going over 90 minutes. Do not wait to feel thirsty to drink something; at that point, your body is already dehydrated.

Cool, thanks! That's great advice, I usually never drink during a run, so good to know.

@wolfje
That's a great goal :)
I have not run a full-marathon yet, only couple of half marathons, and some long runs that went about 16miles.
Therefore, I will just recommend one of my favortie books on running.
It's 'Marathon Man' by Bill Rodgers, a legendary American runner.
His story is one of the greatest, with many plot twists, and it wnats you to run, run, and run some more.
Cheers!

Cool, thanks for the advice. If I manage to do it, I'll sure be blogging about it over here, so you can hear and learn from my experience. LOL

Hey @wolfje. I'm a fellow runner myself. I'm glad to hear you have decided to run a marathon! I've run 7-8 myself.
There is nothing like a big goal like this to elevate your performance to a new level. It may seem like a big and daunting task, but you commitment and dedication will pull you through it. Just believe in yourself and take one step at a time!
I've been running for about 3 and half years. I started with small races like 5ks and just decided to run a marathon. Luckily I made it through :) Over the past year I've gotten into ultramarathons and even ran a 100 miler in September.
Luckily I have a good community of runners around me and a really good friend that is a running coach. We've been training to qualify for the Boston Marathon. He creates plans on Fiverr for runners for $5. We used his plan throughout the summer and all ran sub 3 hour marathons, so I can testify his plans work wonders. We ran the marathon and qualified for Boston, but later found out the course director marked the course .3 miles short and it nulled our qualifiers!!! So now we are training for the next marathon in March. Anyway, if you are looking for a great coach that will create a personalized plan around your running goals, I'd suggest my coach. Here's a link to his running plan page: https://www.fiverr.com/jmoore184
Best of luck on your training for your first marathon! 🏃 💪

Thank you very muhc, that's the kind of advice that I need. A personalised plan can't hurt, I guess.

Yey: run your marathon before 40! I definitely can recommend Berlin. I ran 9 of them (also New York, f.i.) and Berlin wins all of them! Well organized (of course), unexpectedly warm cheering, not difficult (flat), nice views. And I have to repeat: it is really well organized ;) Fingers crossed that it works out!

Thanks for your feedback, that's really helpful. New York was top of my list, but I heard it's difficult to enter as a foreigner and it's expensive (entry fee, hotel, flights) this is why I'm not considering anything too far. Do you have a training schedule or any advice?

I had a training schedule for Berlin very similar to the one presented in this document. I am not all that ambitious regarding time and my goal was 4 hours 15 minutes. This is also how I actually finished "the Berlin". Check other schedules (in this same document), that will help you run faster if this is to your liking. My advice is also: schedule is just a frame... listen to your body. And: the essential part of preparation is the "rest enough" part. Fingers crossed! And I am happy to further talk about anything you think I might help you with.

Ey man!!!!
Good!!! Will it be your first marathon?
Look, I would recommend you Rotterdam. Some of my colleagues run there getting their best time ever! Also, seems that the inscription is not so rigid as London or Paris...
Consider Barcelona or Valencia as well!!!

Thanks Bud!
Rotterdam seems a good contender, but i have to research it a bit more. I guess inscription for Berlin will be similar to London and much more high-profile which is not something what I'm looking for and as I said in my post. I just want to do it and finish it. The time is irrelevant, do you have any good tips in how to prepare for it?

You need a good training plan and be attached to it seriously.
Food and supplementation are essential, also it has to be trained.
Normally I dedicate 6 months for training marathon but it can be done in 4 months...

I'm apporaching the 40 slowly, so I'm going to dedicate more to it, maybe startthe nutrition part a bit later, but especially the training part I am going to start early and slowly

That's a really nice goal to do that before your 40! It reminds me the quote from Emil Zatopek: "If you want to run, run a mile. If you want to experience a different life, run a marathon".
I don't know all the marathons you mentioned but Berlin is definitely the biggest one with all the "big athletes". But I don't think it's not really important for you :)

Yeah, @toofasteddie was also saying that registration for London might be harder, so I'd guess the same goes for Berlin. This will make my options easier already. Do you have any tips in how I should prepare myself? Thanks!

I used to Zatopek program to train for my 10K and I believe it helped a lot since I improved my record by almost 10%. There is one for the marathon that you can download here http://www.zatopekmagazine.com/magazine/Belux/je-m-entraine-32/programme-marathon-13/
It's in french but it's easy to understand I guess.

Hey @wolfje, that's a great goal you have set and I believe you can make it!
Since you asked for suggestions on which marathon to participate, allow me to give you two options that are not on your list:

Thanks for your feedback, I won't do Athens as it's not a terrain I would like to run on and I will visit Cyprus at some point, however the options above are the ones I've carefully selected on terrain and easyness of the route.

If you are going to travel to The Netherlands for a marathon it should be the Rotterdam edition, not the Amsterdam edition ;) It's in April, which is way too early, so maybe this year Berlin and if you liked it next year Rotterdam?

That's too soon, I will only start training in May, but that's a good point Rotterdam in 2019. I'm editing my post now. I have my roots in Rotterdam, so I prefer that one for nostalgic reasons.
