Old 2009 ultramarathon summary

in runningproject •  5 years ago

Back in the day when I was in better shape (and a few years younger) I had the pleasure of competing in a 48 hour ultra up in Quebec put on by the wonderful runner Michel Gouin. Unfortunately the race didn't go as well as I had hoped and ended up getting my 100 miles in just a few minutes over 24 hours before calling it a day. That said, being a long-time runner meant always planning every thing out and recording what I did to see what worked, and more importantly, what didn't. So here's my summary of my race from those years ago that I found just the other day while cleaning up the RV.

Wow that is impressive. I wonder if I’ll ever be in shape to run an ultra.

If you can run a marathon you can do an ultra. It's the mental endurance that I find the toughest part - having the drive going for hours and hours can be tough. Also women seem to do well at the ultra distance. Find a nice relaxed timed event (that way you only have to think about just getting the miles) and give it a try. Just think about completing it for the experience, don't worry about a specific time/distance. Even a DNF will help you learn and other ultra runners are a helpful group.
