The last time I actually said, "Good, he's dead." was when Castro died.
The majority of the headlines coming out were either apologetic to his rule if not downright celebratory.
The New York Times called him a "Revolutionary."
The Guardian said, "As with Che Guevara, his one-time comrade-in-arms, Fidel Castro was the man who made revolutions sexy."
The Washington Post titled an article, Fidel Castro, Who Remade Cuba as a Socialist State, Dies.
Multiple articles referred to his reign as "complicated" and "complex."
These articles were shared by a great many people, many of whom I went to school, many of whom I still consider my friends.
I couldn't sit back and watch people celebrate this manic. There were people still wearing Che shirts at my college.
Never was there mention of Jorge Luis García Pérez, an afro-Cuban who spent seventeen years in prison as a political prisoner who said, "The authorities in my country have never tolerated that a black person oppose the revolution. During the trial, the color of my skin aggravated the situation. Later when I was mistreated in prison by guards, they always referred to me as being black"
Homosexuals were required to undergo re-education and Castro referred to homosexuals as being "agents of imperialism."
About 5,600 Cubans have died in front of firing squads and another 1,200 in 'extrajudicial assassinations.' Most of them political dissidents, racial minorities, or homosexuals.
Che was a gleeful orchestrator of these killings who said in letters to his father that he hated black people and "I have to admit, I really like killing."
So, if you were one of those people who is going to call Castro's legacy, "complicated" or even celebrate him; where do you get off celebrating the death of Rush Limbaugh? How would you respond if Trump died tomorrow?
"Yeah, Castro was a racist, homophobic dictator who murdered thousands of people and ruled with an iron fist; but, he was our dictator. Limbaugh was a meany-bo-beany though."
