Russia has moved a step towards internet censorship, just like China, when a Moscow court banned Telegram messaging app. This happened after Telegram denied the Federal Security Services of Russia the encryption keys that would have enabled the security agency to access user messaging data.
From a technical point of view, it is not clear how the Russian government is going to execute the ban.
Telegram is a popular messaging app, with over 200 million users globally. It is a preferred messaging app among the Russian elite. It is used by both government and opposition officials in Russia, with anonymous people posting what they call ‘whistleblowing’ information from the government corridors of power.
