After conflicting reports over the weekend about how much of the besieged city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine was under Russian control and whether Ukrainian soldiers were beginning to retreat from some areas of the city, the situation is unclear.
While claiming that "the defense is holding" in the city and that there have been "no decisions or orders about retreat," a Ukrainian commander of forces in Bakhmut described the situation in the city and its surroundings as "very much like hell" on Telegram on Sunday.
However they cautioned that "it is still too early to assess" the situation, analysts at the Institute for the Study of War think tank stated on Sunday that Ukrainian forces looked to be undertaking a "limited tactical pullback" in Bakhmut.
