A week ago, UK Home Secretary Amber Rudd warned everyone not to jump to conclusions regarding a nerve-gas attack on a former Russian double-agent.
Teresa May is not heeding that suggestion.
In a late-breaking report, the Sun confirmed that May is preparing to name Russia as the perpetrator of the attack on Sergei Skripal, a spy who was turned over to the UK in 2010 as part of a swap with Russia, after receiving confirmation from her intelligence chiefs.
An intelligence assessment explaining the findings is reportedly being delivered overnight, and will be on May's desk in the morning. The attack, which occurred at a shopping center in a quiet suburban area, led to the hospitalization of 21 people, and left Skripal, his daughter Yulia and a local officer who responded to the scene in critical - but stable - condition.
The findings reveal the presence of chemicals that are tied to a Russian laboratory. It is expected that May will name Russia as the one behind the attack at the 11 AM National Security Council Meeting. A formal charge against Russia could take place before the House of Commons by early afternoon.
In their report to Mrs May, The Sun has learned that MI5 and MI6 chiefs will cite the very rare substance used on ex-spy Sergei Skripal and daughter Yulia as key evidence of the Kremlin’s involvement.
It is believed to have been developed in the SVR Russian foreign spy service’s notorious Yasenevo laboratory.
Mrs May will then summon an emergency meeting of her National Security Council at 11 am to decide on the scale of Britain’s retaliation.
UK Ministers are unsure how to proceed. A full "package of sanctions is drawn up and seeking international support.
Incidently, this all could work in Putin's favor. He has an election next week. Since the investigation was short, he could claim Western powers are conspiring against him. Some speculate that the attack was for this purpose while others say Russia is being framed.
May is known for being weak with Russia meaning this move could be purely political.
But it is feared that a strong reaction ahead of Russia’s presidential elections next Sunday may play into Putin’s hands.
It is suspected that the Russian ruler sanctioned the brazen nerve agent attack simply to goad Britain into a reaction that he can strike back against and look like a strongman standing up to the West to voters.
Former British Ambassador to Russia Sir Tony Brenton said yesterday: “The more Putin can point to Western hostility and aggression, the more he rallies the Russian people around him”.
Sir Tony added: “Russia is number one on a list of suspects that doesn’t include a number two”.
In a hint of action to come, the Chancellor said: “If there were to be an involvement of a foreign state, then obviously that would be very serious indeed and the government would respond appropriately.
Philip Hammond also told BBC1’s Andrew Marr Show that Britain will not be humiliated by the attack, that breaks every rule in the international book.
He added: “The vast resources that have been deployed and the high level assets that we have been able to use show that nobody is laughing at us.
“This is a very serious investigation. Let’s see where it leads us.”
Mrs May came under mounting pressure last night from campaigners and her own MPs to hit back at Russia.

I hope she has more evidence than 'the chemicals are know to be used by the Russians'. The Islamic terrorist attacks and policy of importing immigrants hailing from the very nations that spawn the terrorists is becoming deeply unpopular, enter the Russian bogeyman. TPTB need to mobilize a new external threat to keep the peasants compliant to outrageous revocation of rights, freedoms and true equalities. For example a perceived imminent threat from Russia would provide extenuating circumstances to sell a non-Brexit Brexit deal that essentially in all but name thwarts the referendum. I just don't see how offing some historic traitor on foreign soil in such a public and exotic way is of any benefit to Russia.

That's pretty crazy... Isn't it strange in this era of false flags and fake news that they keep using these "against international law" cards all the time? Assassinating someone with nerve-gas is about the dumbest thing one could do... And what is this double agent? You mean it was a Russian from a Russian intelligence or government agency secretly working for the UK? This idea that the Russians, or the Syrians, or any of these are actively trying to shoot themselves in the foot is just so much to take...
I think Putin probably did hack the US election and helped get Trump in power (using the same tools that the powers that be hack the American selection to put their people in people); so I think they're really pissed off at Putin
But if they were to show proof or evidence, they would necessarily have to demonstrate how it is even possible, and indeed super easy, to hack the American election...
That's certainly what they did with George Bush v John Kerry with the Florida voting machine incident... These back channels obviously exist to tweak numbers so that's one thing, but America is just as guilty as Russia in terms of hacking the American election. The conclusion is that nobody can actually win these elections fair and square any more; that's for sure.
Blaming Russia for using nerve-gas though; especially without evidence... I mean is it just me or do these high-level politicians simply have no brain? They already have a public relations and image problem; on top of that they keep making accusations that play into all of the narratives about their geopolitical agendas... Are they just unoriginal? Do they think their actions go unnoticed? When they do these big public statements: "More sanctions!"; are they really just happy if they can get 50+% of the population with them, and don't care about dissenting opinions?
It's just a mad, mad game they're playing... How slick do they actually think they are? Seems like hubris to me...
At least make it look convincing or something eh?

Everything points to Russia. Though it's not yet clear, I believe the police and forensics will come to the bottom of this. These were professionals who were organised and ofcourse their is motive of attack, which I feel could have been revenge related, as Russia couldn't take it lightly when Sergei Skripal revealed the identity of dozens of Russian agents to British intelligence in 2004. And being granted refuge in UK couldn't make the situation any better.
I feel sorry for the people who got affected in the process. We've seen innocent people being victimized whenever these nerve chemicals come into play after witnessing Syria using the nerve agent and victimizing most of the civilians.. not forgetting the Iraqi army which used nerve agents against Iran during the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s.
Nerve agents are notoriously dangerous to make and handle, so it is thought that most of their production is done by nation states who can afford to invest in highly secure biochemical weapon production facilities. Many nerve agents are colourless, tasteless and odourless, making detecting any leaks extremely difficult.
And while it is possible to trace nerve agents with at least some certainty in the case of chemical weapons, doing the same when it comes to assassinations is very tricky.

British Interior Minister Amber Rudd explained that the police of the former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and her daughter's noxious poisoning identified more than 200 eyewitnesses and examined a file of evidence of 240 pieces.
Rudd said that on 4 March, Skripal and his daughter, unconscious on a bank in Salisbury in the southwestern part of the country, are still cricket but stable.
Nick Bailey, the police officer on the first intervention team after the nerve gas attack, is still in hospital. Interior Minister Rudd stated that the situation of the police officer was serious but he could speak and communicate with his family.
Amber Rudd reported that more than 250 anti-terrorism policemen from eight of the eleven private units were involved in the investigation. The army has been supporting the investigation in Salisbury since Friday.
In the city, military vehicles and protective clothing, gas masked soldiers continue to work in places related to the investigation. One of these places is a cemetery where Skripal's wife and son are given to the land. The scene crews are collecting evidence. @zer0hedge

Sure the only thing this country needs after this whole Brexit fiasco is to upset relations with Russia. We were told we were going to embrace the big wide world. Unfortunately this is what the real world looks like. We see dictatorship in places like China, an India who's 1.5 billion would like to move here and a Putin who uses chemical weapon poisons in our cities. Not to mention Trump and his trade policy or the mess in South America. Middle East is foaming as well. The only place where we can find some sanity is the EU despite all its woes.

She will blame the Russians but will do he haw about it after the revelations that all the millionaire Russians living in the UK make donations to the Conservative Party.
If this was in any other Country the Governments would take action and i.e. close the Embassey freeze assets of Russians living in their country, but I can Guarentee this Government will do he haw .

I remember an article last week about how easy these nerve agents and nuclear material can be bought on the dark web. If this is the case, It could literally be anyone.

whoever it is and proof is definitely needed, before any action taken. Personally, this government has shown itself to be weak, beyond belief. TM was probably the worst Home Secretary we have ever witnessed, the last time anything like this happened was on her watch, and absolutely nothing was done. I would not hold your breath that anything will be done this time.
The conservatives have taken hundreds of thousands of pounds in donations, probably back pocketed millions more, from these Russian oligarchs. They like to talk the talk, but have never walked the walk.
Actions speak louder than words Teresa May, if this is proved, beyond all reasonable doubt. STOP talking the talk and walk the walk, fr once in your miserable, weak existence .
