RV Life: DIY Adding Lights

in rvlife •  7 years ago

Living in an RV is great! It is by far the favorite among all "houses" I have ever lived in. I love the size, it is not too small, and it's not too large. We have the space we need but not a lot of extra space. It forces us to not collect too much stuff to clutter our life. It also forces us to live close together as a family. If you have been following my blog you know that the fourth word in our family motto is Together.

Living in an Rv is great, but I have never seen an RV that feels like a home straight from the factory. Unlike a new house, an RV comes fully furnished and it works but it is not personal. To make it your own you have to add a personal touch by adding or changing something.

We have beginning plans for some bigger renovations where we redo the kid's bedroom and renovate the slide-room, but we're not ready for that yet so we have to settle for smaller changes. We have done some things already like changing the fridge to be a magnetic whiteboard, and adding corkboard to the trimming above the slide (I maight make a post about that later).

For Christmas, we hung Christmas lights around the top of the slide and we really liked it. IT was a green garland with lights and it didn't feel right to keep it up all year, so last night I replaced it with new lights that look less out of place this far from Christmas.

Our new, hidden lights, above the slide.

Because our kids sometimes get up in the middle of the night we need to keep some lights on in the main area of the trailer so that they can see enough to find the bathroom. The Christmas lights were much nicer than the wall lamp we used to use and I think the new lights are even nicer.

This is how the Christmas lights looked.

The new lights are whats called a LED-tape. I choose dimmable lights with multiple color choices. I cut them to length and it took less than 10 minutes to fix them to the top of the slide.

For $17, this is a very nice addition to our trailer.

Now I just have to decide what color I like the best. Or maybe we should change it depending on the mood we want. The lights can also be set to flash and strobe and blink and change automatically but I don't think those features will be used much. Here are a few of the color options that we can choose.

What color would you choose?

I have just spent the last weekend looking at lights! Thanks for the post, I'll look for these LEDs.

They still work well after almost a full week. I'm not sure the tape will hold for very long but that is easy to fix if it starts to come loose. It really adds something to the RV, and it is nice to be able to vary the color.
