Silver lining to this is that the US is sending an experimental Marburg vaccine to Rwanda and the Rwandan government has agreed to conduct clinical trials amidst this outbreak. So it could help advance a Marburg vaccine. There are no approved treatments or vaccines for Marburg virus.
The vaccine was developed by the National Institutes of Health’s Vaccine Research Center and the Sabin Vaccine Institute. It is in phase 2 trials in Kenya and Uganda. Two countries that have had multiple Marburg outbreaks in the past.
This is Rwanda's first Marburg outbreak and it is already the third largest ever. Most of the cases have been in healthcare workers in the capital (which is actually relatively good news as it is easier to implement control measures in healthcare settings).
Gilead is also sending remdesivir, which has been investigated as an Ebola virus treatment (Ebola shares many similarities with Marburg virus).
Mapp Biopharmaceutical’s is also sending an experimental monoclonal antibody for possible treatment.
