RX460 Mining Monero Using Compute GPU Workloads Within AMD Radeon™ Settings

Starting from AMD Radeon Crimson Relive Edition 17.10.2, AMD adds a certain feature intended to maximize blockchain mining by switching the Workload into Compute mode. The menu can be found in Global Graphics under Global Setting in AMD Radeon settings.

Monero is a coin based on CryptoNote technology and resistant to ASIC miner. Since it can't be mined using ASIC, the only reasonable option is using strong GPU like RX or Vega series. The RX 460 2GB is an example of power-efficient GPU for CryptoNote mining.

How's different in hashrate between Graphics mode and Compute mode?

The testbed is as follow:

• CPU : AMD ATHLON 860K (default)
• RAM: 8GB (1600mhz)
• BOARD: Biostar a70
• GPU: Sapphire RX460 2 GB (default)
• Miner Program : Claymore CryptoNote GPU Miner v9.7 Beta (nofee mode)
• Radeon version: 17.12.1

The Test

1. Graphics mode
   

The hashrate shows 334 hash/ second.

1. Compute mode
   

The hashrate shows 334 hash/second which is exactly same with Graphics mode.

Conclusion

While AMD kindly provides users with the new Compute mode which should boost Blockchain mining somehow, unfortunately the result of the test above is not yet as expected. This can be affected in several factor that should be tested separately :

1. The Compute mode is not intended for CryptoNote mining
2. The Compute mode is not intended for AMD RX 460 2GB series
