The speaker, Datuk Dr Jeffrey Gapari Kitingan, is a politician from the state of Sabah in Malaysia. He was born in the town of Kota Marudu and graduated from Harvard University (John F. Kennedy School of Government). His brother, Tan Sri Datuk Sri Panglima Joseph Pairin Kitingan, is also a politician.
Political Career
He is known to be a controversial politician, having been detained under the infamous Internal Security Act on suspicion of plotting to secede Sabah from the federation of Malaysia. He is also known to have switched political parties a number of times, being a former member of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS), Parti Angkatan Keadilan Rakyat (AKAR Bersatu), and United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (UPKO). In 2003, he applied to join the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) but his application was rejected. He was a Vice President of Parti Keadilan Rakyat until his resignation from the position on 28 October 2009. Despite speculation that he might leave the political party, his aides have maintained that he will remain as a member.
In the Malaysian General Election 2008, he challenged his brother Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Joseph Pairin from Barisan Nasional-Parti Bersatu Sabah at the Keningau Parliamentary Constituency, but lost.

Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh bin Tengku Mohd Hamzah (born 1937) is a major Malaysian political figure from the state of Kelantan, and a former Finance Minister. He is an uncle of the current Raja Perempuan of Kelantan. He is fondly known as Ku Li, derived from the last syllables of Tengku Razaleigh: this is a common kind of contraction in the dialect of Kelantan. Its a self-effacing joke as "kuli" means slave in Malay.
He was also the Malaysian Finance Minister (1976--1984), the Trade and Industry minister (1984--1987), the former chairman of the World Bank, former chairman of Asian Development Bank, former chairman of Islamic Development Bank and the founder and former chairman of Malaysian oil company, Petronas. He is now the longest-serving member of parliament in Malaysia followed by Abdul Taib Mahmud.
Petronas
On 6 September 1974, Malaysia's then prime minister, Tun Abdul Razak, announced the appointment of Razaleigh as Chairman and Chief Executive of Petronas (Petroleum Nasional Berhad). Tun Razak said: "From among the new blood, I intended to bring Tengku Razaleigh into the Cabinet. However, I have an important job for him, a job as important as that of a Cabinet Minister. I have decided to appoint him as Chairman and Chief Executive of Petronas, which is equivalent to being a Cabinet Minister."
