in sabahan •  7 years ago  (edited)
My Dear Steemian friends, yesterday I made a post about our 1st ever Kaamatan (Harvest Festival) Family Gathering on the 19th May, 2018. I have lots of things I want to write about Kaamatan which is a yearly celebration in Sabah amongst the Indigenous People especially the Kadazan-Dusun ethnic. The highlights of the event is on the 30th and 31st May, which is a public holiday for Sabah, and celebrated at Hongkod Koisaan, Penampang, Sabah. There will be a crowning of the Harvest Festival Unduk Ngadau (Beauty Queen), traditional events, Sugandoi (Singing competions), Traditional dance and lots of lots of traditional varieties.

THE LEGEND

The Kaamatan Beauty Queen is a symbolic gesture of paying tribute to the sacred daughter, Huminodun, who has been sacrificed for the good of the people. She was the only daughter to Kinoingan and Suminundu. Kinoingan sacrificed his only daughter, a kind hearted and blessed with wisdom beyond her years. In the legend it was said that the Kadazan-Dusun people in the mist of dying from starvation and other great famine-related diseases. In order to save them, Kinoingan (the God) sacrificed his own daughter, Huminodun, was said to be the most fairest and beautiful maiden in her time. Blessed with kind hearted and wisdom, she willingly to be sacrificed and offered her flesh to the great earth so that there will be seeds to be planted and harvested for food, enough for the people.

Truly sadden, Kinoingan sowed her flesh over the land and paddy grew. It is the believed amongst the Kadazan-Dusun people that Huminodun’s spirit is embodied in the rice which is called Bambazon or Bambarayon.

THE PREMIER

Talking about the Kaamatan Unduk Ngadau (Harvest Festival Beauty Queen), reminds me of the Premier of Huminodun's movie I and @kilathecla have attended on the 3rd December, 2017, at Imago cinema, Kota Kinabalu. The storyline is based on the legend I mentioned earlier. This is the first ever Kadazan-Dusun movie done by our local and international film maker. There were so many people attended the event and I don't have much to say about the movie as it will be a spoiler..LOL.

LEARN TO SPEAK KADAZAN

Back to the celebration of Harvest festival, for those who plan to visit Sabah especially those who will be visiting KDCA, where the highlight of the event will be held, these are some useful phrases in the Kadazan’s language that are useful for you:

EnglishKadazan

If you can master the above language, then you're a part of the Sabahan's people. Sabahan people are so friendly and know how to have fun and at the same time respect our tradition.

If you ever get lost for words to say, you just say "Aramaiti". Trust me... Sabahan people will treat you like a long lost brother!
