On May 17, 2003, exactly the day before Megawati, the President of the Republic of Indonesia at that time established Military Emergency status in Aceh. At around 7:00 am the armed forces invaded the village of Jambo Keupok, the community was gathered in one place and then forced to give information about the whereabouts of GAM figures, but because the people did not know they were repeatedly tortured by the villagers, including women and children.
A total of 16 civilians were killed instantly. Of these, 12 were burned alive and four were executed in separate places to death and then burned in one house with 12 others. As a result, Jampo Keupok villagers have to be displaced for more than a month due to trauma and fear that the army will return again.
The Head of the Ad Hoc Team for Investigation of the Events of Serious Human Rights Violations in Aceh, Otto Nur Abdullah, as quoted from mentioned that they have conducted an investigation into the incident with the conclusion of a gross human rights violation. The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) has submitted the results of their investigations to the Attorney General, Monday 14 March 2016.
According to Komnas HAM, many senior military and local government officials are responsible for the case, including former TNI Commander-in-Chief Endriartono Sutarto, commander of Intelligence Combined Unit, commander of District Military Command 0107, Commandant and Commander of Quick Reactor Counter at Battalion 502 Linud Division II Kostrad.
