Dear STEEM community,

INTRO

The topic on health and safety if often only discussed at the work place especially in the heavy industries such as in construction works or in manufacturing industry, to name a few. Rarely this topic is discussed openly or leisurely in public. As a person that has been working in an engineering company, I've began to appreciate little by little on health and safety topics, from being just a practitioner during the job to a believer + practitioner in everyday's life. Before I started working, little did I know that practicing a good health and safety culture would make such a big impact in my daily life.

WHAT IS HAZARD

One of the most important term in health & safety world is hazard. Before we can set up or manage a safety work place or environment, knowing about hazard is the utmost crucial thing. Basically, hazard is anything that may cause harm. If you think about it, a lot of things on our daily life may cause harm to happen. For example, slicing a fruit with a knife may cause bleeding, or perhaps, preparing a boiling water may cause skins to burn. It doesn't has to be too technical like falling object from a crane in a construction site. Hazard does in fact can occur in any possible way that you can imagine.

BEST TO DO - IDENTIFY THE HAZARDS

Knowing that hazard can harm us, I personally think it is best for us to at least try to instill a culture of Identifying Hazard around us. What i mean is, whenever you want to perform any type of activity, try to imagine the hazard that could happen. For instance, walking barefoot on street could potentially cause injury as there are lots of sharp objects on it. Or maybe, crossing a street without looking left and right may cause one to be hit by vehicles.

On another note, one might argue that the chances of experiencing the harm might be little and unlikely to happen. This may be true for most cases but If you think about it, accidents do happen from time to time and for most of the time, they are avoidable. I'll delve further on this issue (likelihood & possibility) later on a separate post but for the time being, let's all try to start with a safety culture in mind, which is: let's IDENTIFY HAZARD.

FIND THE HAZARD

OK, now lets do some exercise. Lets try to identify hazards in the following image. Do let me know in the comment once you've found them.

That's all from me now.

Thank you.

This post is a nice remembrance of my job previously where I was a QAQC for O&G company (^.^)

  1. Wire cord -trip hazard
  2. Carpet flip -trip hazard
  3. Boxes under the desk - Unhealthy sitting position because no room for legs
  4. There is no warning signs on the uneven floor -trip hazard

Welcome to Steemit! Upvoted and followed you. Are you based in KL and which company are you attached with?

Hi bro, are you with health safey industry? I am with the tourism industry, sometime I wonder that challenge in promoting safey and health is tourism industry is that of the act is does not cover the industry as a whole other than hotel. . What's your thought?

Hi @danieldoughty, im not working in health and safety industry. I'm working in a manufacturing company but i do somehow attracted to safety, prolly cause its quite hazardous in the factory. The act doesnt mention other than restaurants & hotels for tourism industry. However, i do think the act still cover people working in any industry according to Sect 15 in OSHA.

Hi @francesaw, thanks for that. Glad to be part of Steemit. I'm currently based way up in northern region, working for a fertiliser company.
