Saint Patrick is regarded as the founder of Christianity in Ireland, as he served as the Roman Missionary and Bishop in Ireland, in the 5th Century.
His times are not so precisely known, however, Saint Patrick was born in Roman Britain. Calpurnius, his father, was a decurion and deacon. Even though his father was a deacon and his grandfather a Catholic priest, Patrick was not an active believer.
Irish pirates apparently abducted him at the age of 16 and took him to Ireland, where he was a slave for about 6 years, after which he escaped and reunited with his family. He expressed this in the Book, Confession of Saint Patrick http://www.ccel.org/ccel/patrick/confession.i.html . He informs us in this book that his slavery time gave him a new vision and yielded a turn in his view of Christianity. Living as a shepherd, he bonded with God through prayer and realized the need to conversion. His return home from slavery was prophesied in a dream, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Patrick, and it eventually came to being.
He studied in Auxerre, in Europe and was later ordained a Catholic Priest by Saint Germanus of Auxerre. He was then led in a vision to serve in Ireland as a missionary and was not welcomed in his initial landing place and decided to take his mission else where, where he could be able to do his priestly duties.
Saint Patrick baptized many believers and ordained priests to lead the newly found congregation. He converted many unbelievers, including rich women who later became nuns and sons of Kings. He received accusations from his fellow Christians and was later tried; however, it is not very clear as to what the accusation were about. Perhaps, the fact that refused gifts from kings, gifts from women, and gifts for ordination of priests escalated the accusations against him, as these high ranked people influenced the community against him.
There are many legendaries attached to Saint Patrick; used shamrock in an illustrative parable, banished all snakes from Ireland, his walking stick grew into a living tree, he spoke with ancient Irish ancestor, he became a folk piety, during his slavery time.
A Pope has never formally canonized Saint Patrick; nevertheless, various Christian churches declare that he is a Saint in Heaven. Saint Patrick is believed to have been buried at Down Cathedral in Downpatrick. 7 March, popularly known as Saint Patrick's Day, is believed to be his death date and is the date celebrated as his Feast Day. The day became a feast day in the Catholic Church due to the influence of Luke Wadding. and it is still commemorated by believers (Catholics) today.
