The book of Daniel is made up of two parts, the first part deals with the life and notable actions of this prophet in the court of the king of Babylon, but then there is a second part that deals with his visions, and this is what is known as the apocalypse of the old testament.
The visions of the prophet Daniel are difficult to interpret, but beyond this, there is a deep spiritual message. And this message is related to the history of the kingdoms of Israel and Judah, and particularly with the moments in which the book was written, probably in the 2nd century BC, after the division of the empire of Alexander the Great between his generals.
The Kingdom of God was and is fought by cruel and violent men in command of armies and great empires such as the Babylonian or the Assyrian, but behind this there is a divine design, so that at the end of time a Kingdom will arrive with a "son of man", and this kingdom will never be destroyed and will establish the dominion of the wisdom of God among men.
Daniel began his apocalypse explaining his first vision, this vision recounts the emergence of 4 beasts, many authors interpret these beasts as the empires that must have followed one another before the arrival of Jesus.
This is how the Book tells us the interpretation that was given to Daniel:
"So he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things.
These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth.
But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever" Daniel 7:16-18.
The book of Daniel encloses in itself the concept of eschatological hope closely related to the Christian faith, this vision of Daniel is alluded to in several passages of the Gospel of Saint Matthew. The Kingdom of God, the domain or empire of the divine perfections, is for all the great prophets a reality that must come true.
