The earlier days with finances

These are such sweet memories of life, our first income, it is such a special thing. From where I came, we never had the luxury of money and that made it all the more valuable. When I was in college, my dad started giving me some pocket money, but it was just enough to meet the travelling expense of college and there was nothing more that I could afford from it. And that's the time when we are blossoming and we have like millions of wishes which we want to fulfill. Even I was sailing in the same boat of wishes, so I decided to do some work and get some money of my own.

I did not have many skills, but I was good with children, so I started giving tuitions to children of primary classes. Luckily, I found 3 tuitions, of which 2 were together and 1 separate. It took 3 hours of my day and I got a salary of total 800 Rs. In the early 90s, this money was lots and I was floating on cloud 9. I remember that first payment I received, I did not know what to do with it, because I wanted to do so many things with it and I was unable to prioritize. It was the best feeling I had in a long time then to have my own money. But my dad was strict and he would force me to save that money, still somehow I convinced him to use some part of it and save some which he agreed to. After this I had this urge to earn more money and I also took up a weekend job at the race course of selling tickets, for which I would get 50 Rs. a day for a duty of 5 hours.

That saving was also like a blessing, because after a few years when I got married I had that little additional money to spend on my own self during my wedding. In those days it did not matter to me whether it was a big or a small job, all I wanted was to earn money. In that time nothing came easy to me, everything was hard work and a lot of struggle, but yet I was very happy, it was the youthful energy, the energy to start life and achieve my big dreams. Even when I started working in a full time job, I kept looking for other sources of income and I did quite a few weekend jobs to generate some additional income.

I had lots of dreams and aspirations and travelling was one of them, so I wanted to save all the money I could and then travel. Every 2 years I would do that, I would save and then spend up all on travelling. It was such a big obsession for me that I started cutting down on all other expenses including some necessities, Like sometimes I would walk up long distances to save on the cab fare or miss celebrating some special events of life just that I could save and travel.

When I got the full time job, I saved for 2 years and then made my first holiday to London and Switzerland, after returning from that holiday travelling became and addiction.

Here I am now in that phase of life where I have to think of my retirement and when I look back at all these times it makes me feel so proud of myself for all the achievements of life that I have had. Still my travel obsession remains and when I have to save for it, I kind of crunch up on other things.

Ten chais per hour, not bad! :-)
In the early 90s I would earn 20 DM per hour in construction.
When I came to India for the first time in ´92,
1 DM was 18 rupees, so 360 chais per hour,
so I felt like a king in India.
Those were the days!

You bet, those were really the good and simpler times. I miss that simplicity in lifestyle now. It took me quite a while to get stable with my finances because whatever I would earn, I would spend in travelling, almost till I was 35 I barely had any savings :-) no regret I enjoyed every bit of what I spent on. But then after that it did start bothering me and I got on to the saving spree. In India we have to plan well for our retirement because there is no government support.
