Satisfying Sage

in salvia •  7 years ago

Whether it is the edible cooking spice called Sage, the colourful annuals, or the Perennial garden plants that you know, they are all Sage, or Salvias as they are known by Horticulturists. There are about 1000 different species of Salvia. They grow in sunny spots or also in semi-shaded position, and are fast growing. The Salvia in the photo is Salvia leucantha or Mexican Sage. These are a perennial plant, flowering most of the warmer months, and benefit from a good hard pruning in Winter when the plant is dormant. This plant is in a garden near the Sydney Harbourside. new 2 030.JPG

Salvia leucantha, commonly called Mexican bush sage, is an evergreen shrubby perennial that is native to Central America and Mexico. In St. Louis, it is grown as an annual that typically rises 2-3’ tall in a single growing season. This sage is most noted for producing a very attractive late summer to frost bloom of showy bicolor flowers consisting of white corollas and longer-lasting funnel-form purple calyces. Flowers appear in dense, arching, terminal spikes (racemes to 10” long) that extend above the foliage. Flowers are attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. Linear, lance-shaped, gray-green leaves (to 4” long) are borne in pairs on square stems. Foliage has a velvet-like texture, hence the sometimes used common name of velvet sage for this species.
Genus name comes from the Latin word salveo meaning to save or heal in reference to the purported medically curative properties attributed to some plants in the genus.
Specific epithet means white-flowered.

Very informative comment, thanks.

Maybe one of the most attractive salvias, Mexican Bush Sage (Salvia leucantha) is prized by gardeners for its ornamental and showy velvety flower spikes produced from late summer to first frost, when other summer plants have given hope of doing anything productive.

Minor Silly Sausage goes to you ! Silly Billionaire. Thanks.

Salvia leucantha. is downy evergreen subshrub produces white or purple flowers clasped by soft purple calyces from late summer to frost. Thanks for sharing your botanical knowledge with us

Wonderful flowers.Thanks for sharing

Beautiful plant and Salvia when grown with rosemary and lavender the garden takes on a Mediterranean look. It is one of the few sages suitable for use as a cut flower, because the fuzzy purple calyces stay on the plant long after the petals fall. This means it can also be used for everlasting arrangements, because the colour is also retained. Thank you @ctrl-alt-nwo

Great comment !

This looks very pretty @ctrl-alt-nwo, although this flower looks very simple, but has a unique beauty. I like this flower, although the leaves are a bit messy. But you say this flower has 1000 different species, surely it has its own beauty. But the 1000 species are numerous, have you ever seen from some other species?
Thanks.

Yes i have seen other species, they are all good.

Thanks @ctrl-alt-nwo

You say this is edible seasoning, meaning it has many benefits. In addition he looks very beautiful, but can be made for spices. What can we cook, flowers or leaves?

Not all the Sages are edible, just the Sage which is used as a spice for cooking. Eat the leaves, usually chopped, or you can buy them in dried powder too.

learn a lot about 'salvias'. impressive photography & very informative @ctrl-alt-nwo

Sage is amazing herb. It is fantastic on meat, for instance lamb or as a help for some sore throat.

Did you know that you can drink tea from sage if the sage was inside around 3 min? If it is more than it can be bad for stomach but still very good for rinsing throat. Or for teeth and gums is really antimflamatory.

Sage is a ctrl-alt-del herb against cold&flu

Helpful fact.

Wow wonderful flower garden . nice look .

Well @ctrl-alt-nwo there is no doubt that Creator of this universe created lot of beneficiary herbs for His creation to get benefits from those natural species. Sage is one of those great blessings of the God :)

Basically, The leaf of Sage is used to make medicine. Sage is used for digestive problems, including loss of appetite, gas (flatulence), stomach pain (gastritis), diarrhea, bloating, and heartburn. It is also used for reducing overproduction of perspiration and saliva; and for depression, memory loss, and Alzheimer's disease.

Sage is a rich source of vitamin A with 100 grams of dry ground sage providing about 5900 International Units (IUs) of vitamin A which is equivalent to 196% of the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) if this vitamin.

Sage is known for its amazing combination of essential oils which contain ketones, α-thujoneand β-thujone. Sage leaf contains certain compounds like cineol, borneol, tannic acid, chlorogenic, fumaric, caffeic and nicotinic acid, nicotinamide, flavones, glycosides and estrogenic substances as well as bitter substances like cornsole and cornsolic acid.

I do believe other than death Sage can heal every single disease, Blessing

Thanks a lot @ctrl-alt-nwo making the folks aware of this wonderful herb :) :)

For the first time I could understand what is meant by "sage" plant.
