Samsung has introduced its first foldable smartphone: The still unnamed device has a so-called Infinity Flex display and combines smartphone and tablet in one device. It has a special multitasking function that can display three apps at the same time.

The new smartphone does not have a name yet, but Samsung calls the innovative foldable display Infinity Flex Display. The unfolded touchscreen is 7.3 inches tall (18.5 cm screen diagonal) and has a resolution of 2152×1536 pixels. The image format of the Infinity Flex Display is unfolded 4.2: 3. The outer touch screen is 4.58 inches tall and resolves with 1960×840 pixels. For this screen, the aspect ratio is 21: 9. The pixel density for both touchscreens is 420 ppi according to Samsung.

Details of the case could not be seen by the visitors of the presentation, because Samsung had dimmed the light in the hall, as The Verge reports. Samsung has not released any official photos of the new device yet. Information about the processor, memory and internal memory as well as the supported mobile, WLAN and Bluetooth standards: Also not available. However, the key question with a foldable screen remains: how often can it be folded without breaking it? In media reports it is mentioned that Samsung speaks of “hundreds of thousands” of folding operations, the device should survive unscathed.

At the same time, Google promised at its Android Developer Summit that future versions of Android will support foldable smartphones. Developers should already be able to use the support for foldable smartphones. In this context, the screen continuity plays an important role: When folding the foldable smartphone together or apart, the display of the currently open app automatically adjusts itself.

For the now introduced smartphone, Samsung has for now developed its own interface called One UI, because the current Android is not yet fit for foldable smartphones. Samsung has also developed a feature called Multi Active Window. This makes it possible to use three apps next to each other. In addition, Samsung will adapt the Bixby voice control to the foldable smartphone.

The sale of the Infinity Flex Display should start in 2019 and mass production in a few month.
