Hello dear Steemians! Today, my family and I celebrated the Makara Sankranti festival. It is a festival celebrated to honour the Sun God and the transition of the Sun into the sign of Makara (Capricorn). In India, it is celebrated with different names depending on the place. For instance, it is called Lohri in the north and Pongal in the Tamil Nadu region. My family is Telugu so we call it Sankranti. This wonderful festival is celebrated by getting rid of old things including bad habits. We also do fun things such as flying kites and decorating the home with rangoli art. In some cultures including mine, offerings will be made to the ancestors who have passed away.
They are my grandparents who have passed away.
We offer traditional food and sweets to them. We also included some of their favourite food items. My grandfather loved to drink tea. I don't know much about my grandmother as I have never met her since she passed away a few years before I was born. The one in the smaller picture is my dad's deceased brother.
We did some prayers and rituals for the ancestors after making the offerings.
This is a mixed vegetable curry. It is served to eat with rice.
This is called mudda pappu. It is basically made of lentils with a texture of being slightly solid and not curry-like.
These are fried long beans.
This is some fried cabbage.
These are some appalapu (pappadam).
I took a picture of these sweets which were a part of the offering because I love to eat them! Happy Sankranti everyone!
