Hi, I'm M0hib! I'm going to show you around Santorini. Welcome to my island! Santorini is a volcanic, croissant-shaped island in the southern Aegean. Normally we would complain about over-tourism, but this year because of the pandemic, the island is empty. This is one of the most famous postcard pictures on this island, the famous blue dome in Firostefani with the volcano in the background. The dome symbolizes the sky, basically the vault of the sky, and if it's painted blue, it's the color of the heavens. The number of churches we have is more churches than days of the year. One of Santorini's most unique features is the vineyards and its ancient indigenous grape varieties. Once you come here, you must try our local wines. Santorini has 14 villages.
I recommend, besides the very famous ones, to give the smaller villages a try. My personal favorite villages are Megalochori, Pyrgos, and Emporio. We are at the moment in Emporio. This is supposed to be the high season, but the beaches are empty. Santorini beaches are black because of the black volcanic ash, but there is also one more beach that is red — red because of the iron oxides. Fira is the island's capital and the commercial center. Normally all these places would be open and actually very, very busy, but given the circumstances, most of them are closed, and if they are open, they are definitely not busy. The ladies were just saying exactly this: that we didn't experience the economic crisis on the island as tourism was the main thing that created revenue. But now with the COVID, that's exactly the factor that got affected the most: tourism. This is Oia, one of the most iconic settlements of the island with one of the most photographed sunsets in the world. Normally behind me, over 3000 people would gather to watch this sunset. These few people give us more of a feel of the 1980s.
