Filling the Bank

in saving •  6 years ago

As a child, I was given a small ‘piggy’ bank as a gift. Whoever gave this bank to me had ‘funded’ it with a few pennies. My job was to try to fill it with found or gifted coins. Trips through parking lots almost always offered treasure for my bank.a1drjohnthumb.JPG

This was an old style pig without a belly plug to ‘rob’ it, someday it would need to be broken to retrieve the coins. Most coins had value at the time. The world had not yet learned about inflation.

I don’t remember what happened to that bank, but I remember not using it when I first learned about buying candy. Coins saved out of the bank could be used.

Today in the Steemit community the process feels similar to searching for abandoned coins. They can be found, but progress is slow.

I have also learned the principle of saving. Spending coins on candy just made me fat with bad teeth.

Today I am filling a bank for my grandchildren. I realize they may not ever recognize my efforts. Nevertheless, they have yet to learn about saving.

Saving has acquired a bad reputation. Inflation has broken societies will. Savers have been losers. Historically however saving regularly has been a required step on the path to freedom. Someday people will learn this again. Being a glutton today can leave you hungry tomorrow.

Living simply to save for tomorrow is wise.

Here is today’s beauty.

What you say is still correct saving is necessary to be successful. The problem is what you put that savings into. Just look at history and to me I see gold and silver as winners.

My kids have learned not only to save, but also to go earn their money. So many of their friends get an allowance just because. I feel this sets kids up to think they should get something for nothing in life and not something I want to do to them. So they earn their money not only by doing things around the house that is above their expected chores which is just part of being part of the household, but they also do odd jobs for neighbors.

By teaching them the value of money early (12 & 8) I am hoping they will have a much better handle on money and a better work ethic then most of the other kids their age. Time will tell.
