CHILD AGRICULTURE: TEACHING CHILDREN TO GROW THEIR FOOD THROUGH THE "BREAD FROM HEAVEN" DINING ROOMS AND THE GREEN FOOTPRINT CAMPAIGN.

WELCOME TO THE BLOG OF STEEMCHURCH VENEZUELA@sc-v

In the framework of the implementation of the "GREEN FOOTPRINT" campaign, we have documented the initiation of the campaign through the schools and children of the communities in general. We are in a very difficult time, not only in Venezuela but worldwide, the Children have been diverted by many factors, and values and behaviors have been defocused. Agriculture is a subject of great importance in the world, so we bring a proposal that fuses urban agriculture with early childhood education.

We will have a schedule to develop that covers three approaches: learn from nature, learn from technique and learn from practice.

Discover, understand and love

The activities that we propose will seek to create, from the earliest childhood, a sense of ecological awareness so that throughout their lives they serve as teaching.
To achieve it, nothing like helping them discover the environment without invading it, enjoying it as privileged observers of the great spectacle of life. Only then can you understand it and, as the famous phrase says, finally knowing it will be to love it.

We are clear about the effort we must make to accomplish this task, our country is going through a deep crisis, the style of agriculture that we want to promote is ecological, and self-sustainable, that everyone at home participates, just as in schools children are encouraged.

One of the techniques that we have applied in a community and that we will continue advancing in it, is the garden of 1m.

A method created by Mel Bartholomew, called the garden in 1 square meter. We have made a summary sheet of the technique so you can download it and have it always at hand.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lbSbNG1jtZKNgPW8eopmHJbaOWYuCnUbqMGAFDXespY/edit?usp=sharing

The method consists of the use of raised beds of 1 m2 each divided into 9 square squares of approx. 33 × 33 cm (it is very practical to make the divisions with wooden slats or with ropes). In each of them different varieties will be planted; The number of plants per square will depend on their size. Thus, plants of large size such as watermelons will occupy two squares, while carrots allow us to plant 16 in a single frame. In the tab tiens detailed the number of copies of each crop.

Features:
It allows to start cultivating with only having a small cultivation space.
The space is so small that it allows us to reach our entire garden to plant, irrigate and harvest.
The crop rotation is automatic.
It is an ideal format for physically disabled people to have their own garden, taking care of themselves.

Visual cultivation guide

The circles indicate how many plants can fit in each square of 30 cm. (the squares better indicate them on your table or box with a wooden grid or with threads).
To plan your crops, cut the squares with the circles next to the name.

Advantages of the garden in 1 square meter

It is a simple method to maintain, since it reduces the tasks of weeding, cabar, repicar …
The use of space is maximum, which allows us to have more varieties in the minimum space.
By planting so many varieties together (and using associations), pests find it more difficult to find their "favorite dish". In summary, we will achieve a more resistant crop.
The rotations are very simple to do, we simply have to move the crop one box to the right or to the left (always to the same side) each new season.
It makes better use of light. Placing the highest crops on the north face (tomato plants, beans in vineyard ..) and the lowest on the south face, we will get the light to reach all crops equally.

A system for anyone to have access to the cultivation of their own food, even in part, for something begins.

LET'S DO IT.

How is a garden made in 1 square meter?

1.- Get a raised bed OR square
These raised beds are very simple to manufacture, although the original is 1 × 1 m, we can expand and make them to measure always keeping the proportion, other popular measures are the tables of 2 and 3 meters long by 1 wide.

2.- Prepare the ground
The raised beds can be placed on the ground directly or on paved ground (thus they are ideal for the terrace or the porch). In the case of placing it on the ground it will be necessary to weed the area.

3.-To plant

Children love to experiment and see how a life is born from a seed, it is like discovering that everyday magic really exists. It is not necessary to have a large garden or plot for a family to enjoy agriculture, simply with a box or pot It can become a productive space.

Encourage your child to help, explaining at all times why the work is necessary and letting him or her know how much (or little) they are involved to leave the soil ready for planting. Children will be proud of the garden, and will be willing to learn more when they see their plants grow. You just have to look at the faces they put on while they are playing with their new tools.

In the campaign in the schools we will also use audiovisual, educational resources. We recommend to the public in Spanish the video produced by the USDA Caribbean Climate Center, we see how Mr. Sapo learns to prepare the soil and manages to harvest fruits and vegetables after that your garden will be affected by a drought followed by a strong flood. "This initiative seeks to teach children about the origin of food and the importance of protecting the soil to achieve a good harvest," explained Dr. William A. Gould, ecologist.

We can also enrich the children by creating suitable clothes such as aprons for pockets to store tools, the friends of @childrensclothes can be our allies in this field, making agriculture an activity aimed at children, also means talking a lot with them. Ask: what would you like to plant? What are the flowers with their favorite colors? What can we eat? If children feel they have something to say, they are more likely to stay interested and win more experiences.

"Agriculture is the proper profession of the wise, appropriate for the simple and the most dignified occupation for all man"

This is excellent @darlenys01, there are many models of overalls for children to make their gardens.

XIORE

An orchard is the perfect excuse to enjoy productive time with your children. Everyone will learn new things!

the activities related to the field (the gardening or the cultivation of an orchard) help to harness the concentration and the capacity of observation in the niños.Estupenda initiative @sc-v.

Children also learn to acquire responsibilities and reinforce their self-esteem. For example, taking charge of a seedbed or a plant, watering it and taking care of it, until they manage to take it to the point of harvest and ... to the plate!
Congratulations @sc-v and @darlenys01 for this great project.

Intellectual skills increase due to concentration and the pause involved in attending a garden. The garden is a space that facilitates the child to focus on a specific activity and have patience ...

Discover the value of teamwork, if you work with your children sowing plants, caring for them and watering them, they will learn that effort and teamwork are necessary to achieve results.

an orchard is an inexhaustible source of work. If you divide the activities between each member of the family, you will be teaching them to be responsible.
Thanks @darlenys01.

Having vegetables and fresh fruits is an incentive to eat healthy. In addition, children are more likely to want to try what they have grown with their own hands.

It is a great learning for these beautiful children, to teach how to form a plan to take care of and to take into account the values of preserving nature in all its splendor.
@windermarin

physical skills are trained with practice and a garden offers different options of moderate exercise.

Very soon I want to make my 1m garden at home, what a good idea to promote agriculture, my brother Aaron and Lucas will love this.

planting and making a plant grow thanks to its own care can be extremely rewarding and help children feel as special as we all know they are!

involve children in the practice of cultivation so that, in a fun way and through their own experience, they acquire values and knowledge that we consider essential, such as enjoyment in contact with nature, respect for the environment or the importance of a varied and healthy diet.

Let the children learn from nature! It’ll even make them consider the beauty of God who made both them and nature. Let them learn from technique and learn from practice; that will equip them to live strong and independently in a world of trials and struggles. God loves the children!

Thanks @sc-v

This is right way @darlenys01!, the Bible says that teach the child where he should go, so that when he grows up, he will not depart from it. Thank you for this good start of Agriculture.
