BEWARE the Traffic Court Scam

in scam •  8 years ago

This is a scam I personally witnessed and wanted to post and warn the Steemit community so you may not become a victim. I'm not sure if all courts are doing this but the one local to me was.

One of the easiest ways to beat a traffic ticket is to just go to court and hope the officer doesn't show up. The law states that you have a right to cross examine the witnesses against you. If there is no witness, the judge must dismiss the case.

How The Scam Works:

Shortly before the judge was to arrive in the courtroom and start hearing his cases, a bailiff stepped forward and announced:

All the officers are here. If anyone would like to pay their ticket now, rather than waiting for your case to be called, you may exit out the side door and pay the cashier now.

Around 8 people rose and exited out the door to pay their ticket. Once they had left the room, the bailiff then announced:

The next names I will announce, your officer failed to show and your case has been dismissed. You may go.

She then proceeded to read off several names. A couple people rose and left. Apparently they didn't fall victim to the first announcement.

Should you find yourself in court hoping the officer fails to show and your case gets dismissed, don't fall for this scam. Wait until you see the officer yourself before giving up.
