I know that Adam Schefter is a sports reporter and it's probably instinctual to tie everything back to sports. That said, even for me, his announcement of Dwayne Haskins' death was tone deaf.
A friend of mine was killed the same way a few years ago. There was no way that I would lead into informing people about his death by pointing out where we disagreed or where he was a less than perfect human being. It's just not the time to point out a person's shortcomings.
I'm sure he meant no harm. Schefter is one of those people who tries to be the first person to get the story out rather than one of the people who lets the story develop into a full picture before tossing it out there -- that's where journalism is going. Still, he deserves to be sat down and firmly told that this isn't a good look.
