One of the saddest things I've experienced is seeing how most students view it as unfair for teachers to include test problems that require creative thinking or applying principles in unfamiliar ways. In some ways, they’re right—it does feel unfair because school often sets the expectation that tests will only challenge you with variations of procedures you've already practiced.

While understanding and problem-solving skills can help you learn those procedures, focusing on problem-solving and creatively applying principles is a longer and more challenging path. It’s much easier to memorize procedures for the test, even if that approach doesn’t foster true understanding.
