Catching that elusive Wahoo!
This creature is fast as a torpedo at the end of your line and has the most amazing striped flashes of color when it's in its hunting mode.
So far we have alot of luck trolling grayish, blues and purple lures for them. These fish like their meals on the run as they are the fastest game fish in the ocean!
I had been fishing for two years before successfully landing a decent size Wahoo. Not because they are scares but because I did not have the skill or the patience to bring it to the boat without my leader being burned off or snapped. Don't over tighten that drag and let the fish have his runs to get tired.
The day I landed this beauty we happened to troll through a shoal of them but made the mistake of have two rapalas and a feather out.
Yes of course we went triple up and lost all three due to the lines getting burned off. The big bet does not always pay off.
The next hookup was my rod and I was determined that today was the day.
Every time he made a run for it my heart started pumping wildly and just so much when he started darting around the ski. I just held onto that rod and made sure while we were being towed in circles that the line doesn't snap and the hooks doesn't pull. When Mr Woo was finally in the footwell my legs were shaking as much as my arms from the adrenaline!
These fish have beak like mouths with razor sharp teeth and you have to make sure not to get those loged in your hand or leg when removing the hooks. Long nosed pliers are definitely a must have in situations like this.
Wahoo are found all around the world and is known for its amazing white meat. I would always recommend making it with some Thai green curry sauce and steamed jasmine rice 👌
Mozambique has meant so much for my growth and experience in angling and this will open even more doors for me in future by getting my adventures out to the public. Maybe inspire some of you to take up sustainable fishing. 🎣
