What is mass?

in science •  9 years ago

Mass is important to our everyday life. We use it every day without knowing it, for example the more massive a car the more acceleration it needs to get to a certain speed.

But what is mass?

Mass is matter, but it is not that simple.

where does mass come from?

Mass comes from the particles interaction with the "Higgs field". The particle of this field is called the Higgs Boson. The Higgs field slows down the acceleration of particles based on how strongly they interact. The stronger the interaction the harder it is to accelerate or decelerate (and the more energy it has at certain speeds)

Imagine it like this you are at a party and have no friends (there), you try to walk through and you may bump into a few people but it's easy enough. You would be like a neutrino.

Now imagine a famous person going through that scenario. Everyone would crowd around them and it would be hard to start going but once you do the entire crowd will follow you. This makes it hard to slow down or speed up much like the Higgs field for more massive particles.

This is where inertia comes from.

Nice description of mass. So you have nailed it down to Higgs Bosons, but where do they come from? This is the fun part of science!

I was going to make that one tomorrow. The Higgs field exists at the same energy level throughout the universe and it takes energy to lower it. We do not know why past that.
