Lost Details: The Solar System

I recently volunteered to write an exam...

Poor life-choice, right?

In an official capacity, I am a mechanical engineer. However -- I work in the space industry, and people in our profession are usually assumed to be experts on all facts, figures, and mathematics which governs the "Great Void" as one famous astronomer refers to it as.

That all being said, I am no expert on the stars and planets.

So when I was offered a chance to write a Solar System exam for the Science Olympiad, I took it as an opportunity to become more knowledgeable in a field which I am already assumed to be an expert in.

You can google any planet right now, and easily determine such information as its radius, mass, length of day, and orbital period. However, there are so many things about the planets are still not common knowledge.

Over the next several weeks, I'll be sharing with you some interesting information I've discovered regarding our celestial back-yard. This may include things ranging from the history and formation of planets, all the way over to the history and technology behind the exploration of space.

Until the next time,

- Raccoon
