News came just a few hours ago that Stephen Hawking had passed away in his home in Cambridge, England.

Considered by many to be the world's greatest living scientist, Hawking was also a cosmologist, astronomer, mathematician and author of numerous books including the landmark "A Brief History of Time," which has sold more than 10 million copies.

Get this...at the age of 22, Stephen Hawking was given only a few years to live after being diagnosed with a rare form of motor neurone disease. Ohhh he only lived for 54 more years and influenced a generation of scientists and those interested in the depths of the Universe.

Here's a short bio from Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Hawking

English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author and Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within the University of Cambridge. His scientific works include a collaboration with Roger Penrose on gravitational singularity theorems in the framework of general relativity and the theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation. Hawking was the first to set out a theory of cosmology explained by a union of the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. He was a vigorous supporter of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum >mechanics.

Factfile: Stephen Hawking

  • Born 8 January 1942 in Oxford, England
  • Earned place at Oxford University to read natural science in 1959, before studying for his PhD at Cambridge
  • By 1963, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease and given two years to live
  • Outlined his theory that black holes emit "Hawking radiation" in 1974
  • Published his book A Brief History of Time in 1988, which has sold more than 10 million copies
  • His life story was the subject of the 2014 film The Theory of Everything, starring Eddie Redmayne

Of course, Neil deGrasse Tyson immediately posted on his Twitter account with his condolences.

Here are a few pictures of Stephen Hawking through various stages of his life.

I found it particularly fun that even though he had a terrible disease that caused a loss of control of most of his body, he still retained a sharp since of humor. He was known to run over people's toes on the campus of Cambridge. LOL!

image.png

He was even featured once in the popular cartoon The Simpsons:

You probably don't remember, but he was featured in a 1993 episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, playing poker with Einstein and Newton. Pretty smart company. I like to think that I'd hold my own. I got a mean poker face.

Here are some of his notable quotes:

Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.

The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge.

I have noticed even people who claim everything is predestined, and that we can do nothing to change it, look before they cross the road.

Now, every hero has his faults and Stephen Hawkings once said that "we should be more frightened of capitalism than robots." Please. Why be scared of the system that has created more wealth and brought more people out of poverty than anything else. Can I give him a pass on this? Actually, no I can't. Understanding the Free Market and Capitalism is far more important than the origin of the universe and black holes.

Still, it's hard to argue that Hawking wasn't one of the most notable scientists ever and I'm sure glad that someone is interested in understanding how the universe was created. I'm a simple man. I'm just trying to figure out how to create Steem tagging algorithms and better understand the economics incentives of this community so that we build a successful reporting bot. To each his own.

Thanks Mr. Hawkings for proving the doctors wrong and for sticking it out. Thanks for having that cool cheek twitching thing that allowed you to talk and for being such a good sport with a sense of humor. Thanks for showing the world how powerful the mind can be even when the body fails you.

I hope they send your body to outer space. That's where you belong, after all.

He died on Pi Day

Yeah it was designed that way. Earth is flat.

RIP to Stephen Hawkings the greatest scientist of his time and one of the greatest that ever lived, you will really be missed. A man so disadvantaged in many ways and at a very young age and yet came to set a pace that very few can follow

Hey, @ashe-oro !!! Thanks to Share this Post.
I always Expecting such type of informative post on your blog.

In the wake of tuning in to this news, I am extremely stunned. We lost a virtuoso from this world. The World has lost a legend. He was a talented individual and to figure he ought to have kicked the bucket long back however remained up till 76 is simply astounding. Among the well known books, Stephen Hawking has distributed are his hit.

Great research into this content it took 30 minutes to read quickly,i can assume that it has took lot of time to blog, thanks a lot for sharing this valueble content.RIP LEGEND.

"we should be more frightened of capitalism than robots."

It's called an idiot savant. Not everyone is good at everything. I'm sure most film directors are terrible actors and Best martial artists won't make good programmers. Specialization has its drawbacks.

It was a nice Star Trek video. Loss of Hawkings is a terrible thing. I read A Brief History of Time while in 9th grade. As for the many-worlds interpretation I'm going to call bluff and stick with the zero-world interpretation (Quantum Information Theory)

It’s ashame you would be wrong on all accounts and the Earth is flat af. 😂

Sad to hear of his passing. Just watched that movie about him last week and was talking to my husband about him guest staring in TNG.

Newton was born in the same year as Galelio died, and now Hawkins died when its Enistein's birthday and pi day, coincidences.

Sad news and painful truth, rest in peace Stephen Hawking. one day Life asked death, Why do people love me, but hate you? Death Responded Because you are a beautiful life and I am a painful truth. so everyone will taste this painful truth 😢😢

Surely he was such a great scientist. He was the present best that lived. But everyone has to taste the reality of death.. A great loss to world.. He for sure was an inspiration.

He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years. His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world.
He once said,

It would not be much of a universe if it wasn't home to the people you love.

We will miss him forever.

Forever FLAT.

Wow...what a sad news...neither the less rest in peace great man thanks for the news @ashe-oro

The great men are passing on, woe to the man who thought success is by amassing wealth, it was long before I realised success is nothing but leaving behind a great legacy, RIP Hawking.

Hawking was a legend. RIP.

Omg...He is dead?

The World has lost a legend. The Albert Einstein of our time I am greatful that I walked this ear during his days on this earth and he won't be just one of those stories I read in books about legends. RIP our dear legend....you will never be forgotten.

He was a genius. I was shocked when I heard this news.
A great loss for this entire world
especally Physics lose a great and legend
His famouse publications are
His many publications include The Large Scale Structure of Spacetime with G F R Ellis, General Relativity: An Einstein Centenary Survey, with W Israel, and 300 Years of Gravitation, with W Israel. Among the popular books Stephen Hawking has published are his best seller A Brief History of Time, Black Holes and Baby Universes and Other Essays, The Universe in a Nutshell, The Grand Design and My Brief History.

Very bad news. After listening to this news, I am really shocked. We lost a genius from this world.
RIP to Stephen Hawkings was a talented man and legend, I think his death for physics is very big loss. . Anyone else can not be Stefan Hawking in this world. . May God bless his soul

He died as a winner in every context of life. He even managed to outsmart death all his life. A great personality and genius. Science loses a legend

So sad news @ashe
Another great person left us

I think you can open a blog about the life journey of scientists, and I think your blog will grow well,
Thank you for your post

😭

Hey, @ashe-oro !!! Thanks to Share this Post.
I always Expecting such type of informative post on your blog.
@asheoro Very detailed news about a person's life,

Indeed he was one the most noticed scientists. Man who roamed the world in his wheelchair. RIP
You did a good work in summarizing his whole life. Keep up your good work

Rest in peace

Elon Musk should send out at least a part of Hawkings body to space! Maybe not all, I think his family would like to keep him.

He was a flat earther before ALS. Because only intelligent folk know the Earth could never be a ball. Oceans don’t bend. @foreverflaterth

nice post
