Geography, a science?

The term Geography has its origin in two words: geo (earth) and graph (description), therefore, etymologically means The term Geography has its origin in two words: geo (earth) and graph (description), therefore, etymologically means "description of the earth". Starting from the phrase of Milton Santos: "Geography is what each person does and, thus, there are as many geographies as geographers" it can be inferred that geography and its subjects are so wide that it is not yet possible to find a definition that will please all who study it, what they do agree on is that it is a multidisciplinary science.

The geography has its origin in the third century BC, from the studies of different professionals such as historians, biologists, cartographers and explorers or travelers who were curious about the facts and geographical phenomenons that surrounded and affected them, wanting to be able to explain them. With time, geography, and therefore, its subjects have had different definitions, which will continue to change constantly due to the discoveries that are made daily in the geographical area.

There are different currents of geographical thought such as positivism, historicism, neo-positivism and radicalism (which I will not explain because they would make the post very tedious).

In conclusion:

  • Geography is a science, because -like all of them-, it follows scientific methods to verify objective knowledge through observation, experimentation and hypothesis explanation.

  • Geography is responsible for studying the relationship between man and the environment. Through the study of this relationship, seeks to explain, relate and integrate variables of various kinds to then respond to a particular phenomenon (this phenomenon can be population, economic, physical, etc).

  • Geography, thanks to its multidisciplinary nature, allows for more complete and broader analyzes because it "takes" information from different branches of science (such as Meteorology, Climatology, Geomorphology, Hydrology, Demography, etc).

In my-perhaps mistaken-opinion, geography is the science that studies space and what is in it; and since everything is in space, geography studies everything that exists.
