Artificially Inteligent Robot taught itself to play Chess... and destroyed smartest chess engine after 4 hours of study!

The unimaginable have happened. Chess engine, which computes over 80 milion (!) calculations per second, didn't stand a chance when matched with new AI created by Google, Alpha Zero.

I probably don't need to explain it to you how absurdly high 80 milion per second is. This chess engine, called Stockfish is able ot defeat any grandmaster of chess, or even reigning champion, who is Magnus Carlsen from Norway.

For the first time human lost to computer in 1997. Kasparov couldn't compete with already quiet sophisticated mashine called Deep Blue. Ever since the computation speed has increased in the engin and nowadays is virtually impossible for any mortal to compete with this brute force of processor power.

The one think that left many chess players unsatisfied though, was the fact that those chess engines could only calculate enormous amount of combination. They had no "intelligence" just strong processor. It made many chess aficionados uncomfortable with idea, that chess might be nothing else they strong mathematical skills.

Well this has changed couple days ago!

The new AlphaZero does nothing like all the chess engines before. In fact, it is estimated that it makes just measly 10k calculations per second ( amature :D ). But the thing is, AlphaZero learned kow to play chess by itself.

Yes that's right. It was left alone for 4 hours and it was playing only with itself. Learning strategy and tactics in the proces. Those 4 hours was enough to achieve level of profficiency of chess that is far better then that of StockFish ( with 80m calculations ).

My friends, artificial intelligence is no joking matter. Every few months there are new discoveries, new technologies which improve it's ability. The future depicted in oh so many hollywood movies may not be so far as we might imagine

And what do you think about the developement of AI? Do you think it pose a threat to humanity? Could we teach machines to not only be good at counting, but have creative imagination? Where would it lead us!

Thanks for reading and please leave a comment, and share your view on the subject. Ciao!

Awesome, but scary knowing that our own creations are and will get smarter than us, hopefully they don't turn on us one day when they don't need us anymore

Ye it is very scary. Chess have been around for around a millenia, and this AlphaZero managed to get all this knowledge by it self in just couple of hours. That makes you think.

To be honest, I'm a litle bit afraid of what can happen in the future with artificial inteligence. When AI thinks by itself it's a big alarm for humanity. I understand that AI has the purpose to help people, but who really knows what can happen? Let's hope for the best, though!

Only time will tell. It's up to people to use any new technology wisely.

Yes, you are right.
