Google’s DeepMind and the Future of AI

in science •  7 years ago

AlphaGo is an AI algorithm made by DeepMind, the division of Google which for the first time in history have created a general purpose AI. AlphaGo succeeded in beating human beings at the end shunt board game of Go. Like chess, this game has an almost infinite possible moves, so the program cannot use brute force for deciding on the next move. This video explains they speak learning algorithm used by DeepMind for creating these general purpose AI application.

An interesting point is that sometimes if you ask a human expert how he did a task he may reply that it just felt the right thing to do. He cannot explain why he chose that path. This is what we call intuition and this is what deep learning is all about. In this video, it is explained how intuition is incorporated into AI learning algorithms.

AlphaGo is the first computer program to defeat a professional human Go player, the first program to defeat a Go world champion, and arguably the strongest Go player in history.

While it seems to come close to a general AI, AlphaGo is sadly not there yet. While a logical approach (i.e. as used in chess) doesn't work for Go, the deep learning algorithm's purpose is still focused around Go.
Deep learning was also used to beat a professional DOTA2 player, except that was also applied in a very limited setting. It's a slow development but an exciting one!
