Science Experiments : Physics Worksheet about Oersted And Lorentz Force

in science •  7 years ago

Hello all steemian hope you all have always have great days. This time I will share a physics topic about Lorentz force and Oersted Experiment. Hopefully this discussion can be useful for us all.

The purpose of this experiment is to prove that a wire through an electric current will generate a magnetic field, to observe the occurrence of lorentz force on the wire. And can determine the direction of Lorentz style with right hand rule.

Look at the following experiment pictures ..!

  1. Figure (a-1) The wire has not been fed by an electric current, so the magnetic needle is not deviated.

  2. Figure (a-2). The wire is electrically flowed downward, the magnetic needle diverges to the right.

  3. Figure (a-3). The wire is flowed with an upward direction, the magnetic needle deviates to the left.

The Oersted experiment that around the wire run by an electric current is a magnetic field. To determine the direction of the magnetic field (B), use the right hand rule as in this figure!

  • The thumb shows the direction of the current (i)
  • The four fingers show the direction of the magnetic field (B)

Lorentz force discussion

We know that Lorentz force when the direction of electric current in the fox the direction of the lorentz style also changed direction.
Lorentz force is a magnetic force generated by a magnetic field, due to the interaction of the magnetic field with a moving electric current. The Lorentz style is also called the Magnetic Style.

The magnitude and direction of the Lorentz force depend on the magnitude and direction of the electric current.
Since the Lorentz (FL) force, electric current (I) and magnetic field (B) is the vector quantity then the large mathematical observation and direction of Lorentz force is the product of the vector (cros-product) multiplication of I and B.
FL = I x B

Tools and Materials used in this experiment are as follows:

  • 1 Magnet cylinder
  • Copper wire (10 cm)
  • Battery 9v 1 piece
  • Switch 1 piece
  • Cable 2 pieces (15 cm)
  • Clamp 2 pieces
  • Cutter and scissors
  • Isolation
  • 3 needle compass

Work steps :

A. Oersted Experiment.

  1. Complete the tool as shown below, the copper wire is somewhat loosened.
  2. Put the compass under the copper wire and connect the switch, observe what happens to the compass?
  3. Repeat the above experiment by changing the direction of the current, and write the result of the observation into the table.

B. Lorentz Force Trial

  1. Complete the tool as shown above, the copper wire is somewhat loosened.
  2. Place the cylinder magnet under the copper wire and connect the switch, observe what happens to the copper wire?
  3. Repeat the above experiment by changing the direction of the current, and the direction of the magnetic field. Write the results of his observations into the table.

Observational data

Conclusion

When a wire through an electric current creates a magnetic field. The magnetic force is a force that occurs inside the magnetic field, due to the interaction of the magnetic field with electric current.

The direction of the lorentz (FL) force, electric current (I), and the magnetic field (B) are perpendicular to each other.

This tool only shows the presence of magnetic field and magnetic force around the wire, which can be further applied in making more useful tools such as electric motors, fans, etc.
