Skywatchers will have an astronomical triple threat (full moon, lunar eclipse, and a comet) to observe this Friday night, 10 February 2017.

"Snow" Moon

The full moon this Friday night will be the "snow" moon.

Penumbral Eclipse

On average 35% of all eclipses are penumbral eclipses.

According to NASA the exact time of the eclipse by time zone is 7:43pm ET, 6:43pm CT, 5:43pm MT, and 4:43pm PT.

Comet 45P

Well after the lunar eclipse a comet, Comet 4P, makes its closest approach to the Earth, it will be just a mere 7.4 million miles away from our planet.

Technically it will be visible early Saturday morning around 3am. If you are using a telescope or binoculars, you should look for a bright blue-green comet.

Thanks for the information.

Do you know whether the lunar eclipse will result in a so called "blood moon?"

I actually got out of bed to observe one last time, and I would gladly do it again.

I do not think it will result in a "blood moon".

Threat or treat? I'm not much of an astronomer, but I like to see some of these events. The skies are fairly dark around us, so you can actually see the stars

Threat or treat? I guess that depends on your perspective. One could take the signs in the sky this Friday night as an ominous sign Or just enjoy the spectacle in the sky. I will choose to enjoy the the sights.

I don't know how bright will be the sky on Friday, but I hope to see the eclipse on Friday. For the comet, I am not sure to last that late... ;)

@grandpere: if we are lucky we could see it... ;)

I think I will be able to see the full moon and eclipse before I go to bed and see the comet when I go to work at 3am Saturday morning. Of course it all depends whether there are clouds or not.

Steem on,
Mike

Ooooh! I'm still getting used to the constellations now that I live in Florida. I think I can see Hercules. Maybe - just maybe I'll be able to see the comet...as long as we don't have overcast skies -- which has been my curse for every cool cosmic event since I've moved here! grrrrr....

The forecast for Friday night going into Saturday has cloudy skies in my area too. While I should be able to see the full moon and lunar eclipse, I do not think I will see the comet. :(
