Mrs Ples could actually be Mr Ples

in science •  7 years ago  (edited)

The next skull to be found in Africa was by Dr Broom.

He created a new genus for it, Plesianthropus and because the skull was relatively small with smallish canine teeth it was presumed to belong to a female. The skull quickly obtained the nickname "Mrs Ples".

A lot has happened since its initial discovery.

Plesianthropus has pretty much been dropped as a genus and "Mrs Ples" has been reassigned to Australopithecus africanus

There has also been an and off debate around the gender of the owner.

At that stage this was the only adult Australopithecus skull around. since then many have come to light and the size of the canines has been re-assessed in relation to a much broader set of individuals of known gender.

To compound the difficulty relevant portions of the skull were damaged a few years after its discovery when acid was used to remove stubborn particles from the fossilized skull.

The latest study goes back to evaluating the skull, not in its current condition, but using the dimensions recorded in the first descriptions before the acid damage.

These dimensions show large enough canine roots to confirm that the skull belongs to a male Australopithecus when compared to the more plentiful specimens of this species now available today.

Welcome "Mr Ples" or "Mr Aust", sorry for all the gender confusion up till now, but I guess that is in keeping with the current vogue of the times.

So that would make this literally the world's oldest case of gender re-assignment?

That's about right!

Genius!

Thank you for this interesting post. I guess I'm quite cynical when it comes to evolution theories. I don't think I have enough faith to believe it. Thanks again, following YOU!

Faith is reaching out into the unknown. Research and study equip us to reach out further. I suggest you approach the subject with more depth.

How do you know that?

I've been a skeptic too... but study enough to understand the material presented comprehensively and issues resolve themselves, then you are left with deeper even more meaningful questions.

What were you skeptical about?

evolutionary theorey

Why did it seem too far fetched?

Ha, interesting!

Man, with these advancements in science sometimes it just seems that previously done work renders useless and stuff needs to be reexamined again and again with new techniques. But I guess thats actually needed in order to advance in the first place :-)

Thanks for sharing @gavvet!

wow got a historical info thanks for shareing like it !

Acid damage, a bunch of years since the individual was alive, and still science can manage it. It's amazing how we are advancing. I hope in the future we can recreate dinosaurs and extint animals :)

Man that would be really cool!!! Love your comment! Following YOU!

Scientific research doesn't need to follow Vogue's latest gender rules, they change them every week after all, it would be impossible to keep track of them lol.

Too true...

"Welcome "Mr Ples" or "Mr Aust", sorry for all the gender confusion up till now, but I guess that is in keeping with the current vogue of the times"

😂

Great article though! After reading i went quickly in your profile to see if you did write on the Taung Child - hadn't you, i'd have suggested here in this comment - and surprisingly you did!

Amazeballs! You got yourself a new follower. One that you will feel 24/7 in your life in comparison to the other 13000 that were as intense as me in the first place /s 🤠

Very nice. We seem to find ourselves ( the science fans) around steemit sooner or later.
Found a lot of science people today! And I was not even searching.

I must confess: Today I didn't see a single Photo Contest on my newsfeed :D

Thanks for sharing this @gavvet, really interesting to read about how technological advances have changed our view on certain discoveries.

Imagine what people would have thought if they found this a couple of hundred years ago.. the answer would have been completely different to what it is now!

Thanks again for sharing this. By the way, I'm running a project called the Steemit Success Initiative, which is a project that aims to grow and develop Steemit as a platform, as well as help its users grow. I will not spam your post with a huge comment about it, but I am currently looking for support for the project in any way possible. If you are interested, you can check out the posts on my page, or I can tell you more on Steemit Chat/Discord. There are some really big things coming up, I just need the support for the project first. Thanks!

P.S. I am just upvoting my comment so you will see it, happy to remove it after you do!

I also thought I will write an article on human evolution, but I was reluctant even being an voracious anthropology reader.
I had almost studied all the major scholars of human evolution Leaky, Hellman, pilbeam and many contemporary Anthropologists. But being a minnow I thought no body will give it any heed. But after seeing a response you got I will definitely consider a series of stories on linkages in human evolution. At least from Dryopithecus, australopithicus, pithicanthropus erectus, homo hails, Neanderthals and cromagonman.
I am Indian a complementary RAMAPITHICUS will be too added.
I don't think it matters was it male. Or female or A. Afaranses, A. Africanus, A. Anamensis, or Boise. What matters is people are now believing evolutionary history of man.

Regards.....

I don't think it is plausible! Great comment, following you muzi0202!

Hope so thanks followed back!!!

at long last the open deliberation of whether the scull is a male or female have been settled.
There are still more to be found about the fossils in Africa..

Good Point!

there are lot of fossils in africa. many more yet to be discovered

:) couldn't sleep because of that

I think you did a good work with this article. You always share great info

Nice Post thanks you for this attractive information @gavvet

I Agree he posts some cool stuff!Great comment, following you @ajmalansari!

Mrs ples.. Hmm what country could she have been from?, so many questions really rushing through my head. Who was she? How did she die? What was her face like? But i hope she was a goid woman.

Good women are awesome! Great comment, following you @adetola!

discovery that shook the world.
further research to be able to prove who it really is between "Mr Ples" or "Mr Aust".
let's hunt again !

Finally the debate of whether the scull is a male or female have been settled.

There are still more to be discovered about the fossils in Africa...

if I may know what the skull is @gavvet

Very informative post @gavvet. Thanks for Sharing with us. I think gender confusion will diclose soon.

It's another history of our human beings.

Oh, we have so much more to discover and learn.

Your Posts are golden.

Yeah. I think writing down might have its advantages as well as disadvantages too.

When writing, you might not really get to pit down everything in the head.
But then in a video or an audio, u can get to say everything that comes to the mind.
But currently, I do more of writing cuz I'm not all that pretty to appear on a video. Lol.

Thanks for sharing

good post science @gavvet thank for shearing

goog picture

that's a nice progress, but it's a bit difficult to understand, thanks for sharing,

May it be the hobbit...?

Awesome upvote!!

So that would make this literally the worlds oldest case of gender re-assignment

Love your comment LOL!!! Thank you. Following YOU!

@gavvet,
Interesting finding! No matter Ples is a male or female! Now we know we had that history and we have a lot to find out! A lot of histories and great stories still buried and hope scientists will discover them too!

Cheers~

Sexual dimorphism of australopethicus I think suggest canines of males and females are almost same in size and I think the body size differed only. Though it's every confusing to determine their sexuality. But I would say let it be Mrs ;)

Bereh bro

Interesting to read.. thanks for sharing!

wow..
Nice science evolution geology africa..
thanks for sharing..

As you said dimension, I think scientists have even tried another method of sexual dimorphism which Geometric mean method, but defining the sexuality on basis of canine is really time taking. How easy it would have been to determine their sexuality if they were alive ;)

I have learnt about evolution.

The one thing I do remember from my basic Physical Anthropology class was that the term: 'Australo' means 'southern' or the southern parts of Africa, and that this hominid had more 'ape-like traits' than modern human ones.

Thank you Mr. @gavvet for your sharing post. I think this good information about history in the world. May you can suggest me more information about “Mrs. Ples" and about Australopithecus africanus. Because I am interest to know more history about both of them.
Thank you very much.

thanks @gavvet has shared with us.

thanks for sharing new updates and i like your post because i have thrust about science...

is this predictable ? Science is now so advance, it left me behind lol.

looks like Homo sapiens the old one

yuppppp ...Technology and information is just always on an exponential rise! when was it first discovered and identified to be a "mrs"

nice post

profound debate on the gender of the scull ...

An interesting read. Good job.

Nice post, thanks for sharing

Hopefully tomorrow will be better

How scalp of human can be identified that which gender/sex its belong? Science is so advance OMG!

The shape of the skull is strange. It doesn't mean if it is a male or a female. It is difficult to know through a size and shape of a skull.

Your Posts are golden.

Yeah. I think writing down might have its advantages as well as disadvantages too.

Nice post.thanks information

Good thanks for sharing with us i really like this

I always wonder, how many areas there are in science. In particular, anthropology. It's amazing, how much information you can find on turtles! Thanks for sharing

It's really creepy !

means there is still a problem yes?

Many said nice post I believe they have a beginning to this post. Like me I wanted to know what you where really saying but was difficult

I like your knowledge of human skulls, go ahead hopefully what you want will be achieved

Wowwamazing post by @gavvet

"I know that i know nothing!, the only thing i know is that i know nothing" (in spanish - as I learned it the first time - "Yo sólo sé que no sé nada, y aún sabiendo, yo sólo sé que nada sé")
I find it fascinating how anthropologist form their theories and how often they later find out they were pissing far from the can when they find new evidences. It makes me think about that philosophical paradox because we think we know, and sometimes we even acknowledge we don't know nearly enough, but still we need to make informed assumptions in order to advance in our own knowledge! - thanks for sharing!

I'm very skeptical with these sort of things, evolution, dinosaurs, fossils, homo erectus etc, i think it's more the time period that throws me, normally they say it/they existed/ or something happened so many millions of years ago, which for me, is just a bit hard to believe.

This is why we are a science group to doubt everything and then search for evidence. I just hope you will search for the evidence. If we burn all the books in the world, only science books will be rewritten the same after 10000 years :D Cheers!

Thank you for sharing @gavvet you really always surprise me with your publications so well focused and researched, although it should not surprise us all that man is capable of doing, since God has endowed us with science and wisdom!

The latest study goes back to evaluating the scull, not in its current condition, but using the dimensions recorded in the first descriptions before the acid damage

This is increasingly becoming the norm, to use recorded dimensions for studies. It's not in the same way as this, I am talking about 3D imaging projects which are scanning world Heritage sites to create 3D images and saving them for posterity. This is a novel way of ensuring that we do not lose priceless architecture completely, and keep a digital backup

I work in a related field. I would really like to know that we have a database of those Heritage sites. Actually I think it's a genius idea for us, science guys!

There is actually a project which was featured in the National Geographic Magazine a few years back

Very cool, I wish I had thought of that. I work in 3D Modelling and I would be interested of a such project.

wow very nice could.

Thank you for this deep research and useful post

Hi @gavvett I really do like your posts and enjoy your content. Purely out of curiosity I was wondering if you would like to share on how you manage your faith in relation to science? If you would rather not engage in such an extended topic, then please don't feel obliged. I am merely asking out of curiosity. Kind regards mate!

But if i may ask, how true is evolution? Because even after reading about it, i still dont think it happened ever

100% true. The facts are so widely spread and in such a large amount that someone that doesn't accept it must either have had a bad experience with education and learning or was too exposed to conspiracy theories and such. I spent a lot of my time on Quora talking and explaining this to people. On one side you mostly have scientists and educated people and after digging in the other side you find out that education failed a lot of people in the world :(

When we are so beautiful :)

Hello @gavvet,
I want to congratulate you for your post. You re doing it great.
I also want to say you that im still learning how to use all the tools in Steemit. I just saw when i vote you that i put a little bit minus, but was not my intention, i try it again and was not voted, and i was not sure again, i voted you last time and i put plus on it. It was minimun amount since my voting power is still not very hight. I hope you understand that i ment.
I will be following you and my intention is support you.
Thumbs up for you!!
Best Regards

wow so very excellent bro ,it's very haunted , your nice post

@gavvet So my theory is that Mrs. Ples was an hermaphrodite. About 1.7 % of the current population can be considered hermaphrodite. As science goes, the current theory holds until it is disproved, wonder how you could prove something like that. As far as I could find, it would be almost impossible to tell...

Also as evolution and adaptation goes, who is to say that teeth sockets were not deeper for females in the past, because primates had to rely on using their teeth a alot more than more recent descendants, and deeper sockets would allow for stronger teeth. In some species females are the hunters, as with lions, and males kind of chill and wait for the food. Would be interested to know if their teeth sockets show these traits. I guess that having more than one form of so called proof would settle this argument.

Lovely post, I also did a research on skulls

scull or skull?

A “scull” — spelled S-C-U-L-L — as a noun is an oar, often with a cupped blade, and often mounted on a fulcrum at a small boat's stern. ... A “skull” — spelled S-K-U-L-L — as a noun is the bones that make up the head of an animal. Each of these words can also be used as a verb.

http://www.kirkmahoney.com/blog/2008/08/scull-vs-skull/

actually shows you are not copying it from someone else.

thanks for the post

Saya tidak mengerti maksudnya

An very amazing discovery, I think that the skull looks awesome, and I am sure it’s very expensive to. How much do you think that deserves? Price I mean
