Rewriting the story of Human Origins.

in science •  8 years ago

The scientific perspectives on human origins just got a whole lot more complex.

In the last 30 days or so we have had a number of scientific papers appear that add whole new layers of complexity to the current understandings of Human Evolution and distribution of Hominid ancestors and modern humans.

These finds come from three different continents, North America, Europe and Africa.

img source

Nearest to us in time, is the find of broken Mastodon bones and rocks in North America that now place humans in the new world more than 100 000 years earlier than previously thought.

You can get further juicy details here

Furthest from us in time is a new contender for a missing link from Apes to Hominids with the interesting nickname of "El Graeco"

Basically from a couple of teeth and a few bones there may be another contender for the split from apes to hominids happening in Southern Europe as opposed to Africa as is most commonly accepted.

img source

It's controversial and technical but you can read more about it here or the actual paper.

My take is that there is a lot more evidence than just a couple of teeth and a few bones that is backing the "Out of Africa" position.

Finally, in the middle, we have further most recent revelations around homo naledi

Further chambers have been found that increase the weight of evidence behind the theory that this species disposed of their dead.

Also the age of the fossils from the first finds has been determined and indicate that though this species is old, with somewhat very primitive aspects, from as much as 2.5 million years ago, it survived, in parallel, all the way down to where it may as a species have interacted with early humans.

That is amazing, It adds far more complexity to the Human origins story and now nobody can be certain just what species to associate with tool creation. The picture is no longer so simple or cut and dried as it was just a month ago.

There is a great video series to watch which takes you into discovering the chambers in these caves, uncovering the fossils and all the difficulties involved. It's really fascinating...

I was reading the whole out of southern europe controversy.

The take away there was that there is not enough supporting evidence to displace the africa theory.

Agreed.

I was looking at a paper about this the other day. Interesting stuff. In time hopefully we can uncover more evidence, or improve technology enough to gain a clearer picture of our evolutionary past.

The picture becomes clearer as we discover more pieces of the jigsaw puzzle.

Darwin really screwed up everything about evolution, Darwin's theory of evolution is incorrect and is a pure conspiracy. If a life could originate by chance, then God could also originate just by chance.

I absolutely agree with you. Why is it so difficult to accept/believe that we were created by God and in His image. In fact, He formed us with His own hands and blew breath into our nostrils which give us life, when we die we blow out that very breath and it is the last we will ever do on this earth. Without that we are nothing, what makes a newborn baby alive? the same breath given to us from God, without that we cannot exist. We all originate from Adam and Eve. People would rather believe Darwin, maybe he was an Ape before, but definitely not me!

who created god?

If you die, and if you are righteousness to God. ask him and he will answer... (^_^)

The definition of God, is uncreated. He does not have a beginning. So if you ask the question who created God, it is as absurd as my friend asking me that my brother Tom gave birth to a child, is it a male or a female.

What about Tim, the God Eater? By definition, Tim is able to eat any God, no matter how powerful. Tim is also defined as extant and uncreated, so it must be true, because it says so right in the definition.

This prevents any creator God, such as the one in the Bible, from existing. Because if it did, Tim would eat it right away.

so it's not science then.
gotcha..
bye now.

What is this!! RIDICULOUS! I'm sorry but I won't sit here and have Darwin and science slandered in front on me. Stop attributing the beauty and complexity that is beyond our comprehension to some figment of your imagination. Believing in god only diminishes your ability to be able to accept and understand the universe around you as you use him as a scapegoat to explain away complexion in the universe we don't grasp. I agree with @everittdmickey this is not science!! You can not prove to me that god exists, but I can prove to you that evolution works, that physics works, that math, chemistry and biology are proven fields which predict outcomes in our reality!!! Everyone is entitled to their belief, more power to you. But if your not going to scientifically analyze the beliefs you hold, then remember to sometimes hold your tongue on matters of Science.

stolen valor huh?
pretending to be 'scientific'.

Common, the Darwin's theory hasn't been fully accepted by the scientific community. What is being taught in our universities is because they don't have any other option then to believe in Darwin's theory, even though nothing is proven yet.
If evolution meant only gradual genetic change within a species, we’d have only one species today—a single highly evolved descendant of the first species. Yet we have many. How does this diversity arise from one ancestral form?
Evolution is undeniably true if it means simply that existing species can change in minor ways over time, or that many species living today did not exist in the past. But Darwin’s claim that all species are modified descendants of a common ancestor, and DNA mutations and natural selection have produced those modifications, are not so undeniably true.

WHATTTTTTTTTTTT?????????????????????? No. Sorry to pull rank, but you obviously don't know what you're talking about. The theory of evolution is now confirmed as scientific fact, there is no debate about it. We now understand there were some inconsistencies with Darwins work, however he did some of the most accurate, influential and mandatory early work for the theory. I DONT KNOW where you are getting your information from but if all evidence leads to a theory, there is no opposing theory, and the theory turns out to be true in both practice and paper, there is no scientific reason to believe otherwise. This is what we observe with evolution. I AM IN UNIVERSITY FOR BIOLOGY, so please don't debate me on this subject unless you have REAL evidence that proves the opposite. EVOLUTION IS PROVEN. __________________________________________ It is also obvious from your comments you dont UNDERSTAND the concept of evolution and how it manifests. The entire idea of evolution is that there is no direction, speciation acts on all individuals of all populations of organisms causing different species to arise. There are multiple times of speciation that can occur and each lead to different times of phenotypic and genotypic change along with population sizes and realized niches. ___________________________________________ ___________________________________________ I will give to you that yes, Darwin's exact description of evolution in its details weren't all correct. Which is why we have modified our theory of evolution to fit what it is today. Claiming he hasn't been fully accepted by the community or that his theory is "pure conspiracy" is simply not true. It would be like attributing the same characteristics to Einsteins theories because he didn't properly describe Quantum Mechanics, just general relativity.

I agree with your comment. There has been a cover up in regard to the creation, they don't want it to get out ! I believe in the bible and the account given -literally ! Fallen angels took the daughters of earth and had intercourse with them and produced the giants - nephilim. They had great knowledge and expertise and built many of the ancient worlds megalithic structures, like the pyramids etc. This is a fascination study in itself about the technology of the pre flood inhabitants of earth. God had to destroy these people because they had corrupted the DNA hence (hence the flood)
Angelic intrusion into the God's world had to be stopped (creating hybrids)... God took Noah as his family had not been corrupted and began again with him, the messiah had to come down through this un- corrupted line of descent. "as it was in the days of Noah so shall it be before the coming of the son of man" - giants re emerging again in the last days ?

breathing intensifies Could you read my reply to @hms818 please?

Have faith in God.
Sceptics say "show me God , or a miracle and I will believe in Him'
God says 'You believe in me and trust me and I will show you miracles and more'
The order here is important :)

No, don't show me a miracle. Don't show me a god. One of the main notions of our faith is the idea that god is the ultimate good, sees all, hears all. Then why do our people suffer? Why are children globally impoverished and while the 1% bathes in money, the greedy rule while the honest rot? I don't know what kinda of god could have allowed this. If we are build in his image, what must his character be to spawn such demonizing, horrible people, as are born every day. I have accepted my place in this universe and life and do not need some type of metaphysical power to justify my existence. This notion that you are waiting out for a miracle, praying on a god to answer your prayer and come to your rescue, it's bogus. Trust in yourself and create your own miracles, aspire to be the best you can be and not what you think god made you.

People suffer because of sin.(we inherit this nature)
God gave us free will to choose...we were not created robots to obey God.
We create our own suffering by rejecting God's offer of help.
Jesus died to give us life, to make a way back to God for us.
He died for each one of us - just believe in your heart and accept that and you will experience His resurrection life in you...it really is that simple :)

Thanks for this I have strong ideas based in science and human compassion and back you 100 percent

It isn't hard to believe that. In fact, it's very easy because it's a much simpler story. This is why it is more attractive to people without a background in the natural sciences to throw up their hands and default to creationism because it is easier for them to understand.

@alexbeyman Thank you for your comment and reading material. I will make an concerted effort to read it. I do have a background in science , in fact I have a Bcur degree @frieda

That will help you decipher some of the more esoteric contents of those articles then. Really it's only necessary to fully read the first one, the other two are supplemental and included in case you want more details after finishing the first. I do recommend at least reading 1 and 2 though.

Thank you, looking foward to read it and will give you feedback when I am done

not quite. we have evidence for life evolving from chance. we don't have any evidence God evolving from chance

We are not that much capable to understand or analyse any evidence of God evolving from chance. As we evolve, our intelligence grows and may be in future , we may find the evidence.

So why are you making any speculations about it?
We are able to analyze evidence of our origins though.

What can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence

Darwin did the best he could with what he had and what was known at the time.
He didn't screw anything up.

I agree we are created in God's image - no doubt about it !

I wonder about the possibility of finding frozen remains with intact DNA that could be used to bring back some of these other hominids. I'd like to study them.

I've also been excitedly following the efforts to re-create the wooly mammoth from recovered, frozen DNA samples. It will probably sound frivolous but I have always wondered what the meat from a mammoth tastes like and would like to try it some day.

Good! But that is against bible or christianity... Darwin is crazy! Ahahaha...and beside its just a theory! Hehehhe... And the bible is not a theory... its a fact! (^^)

A science that benefits humans, all complete for human organs.
It's interesting to read!
Good job @gavvet

The key to unlock the mystery of human origins in the Buddhist sutra.
*The origins of man are relatively simple, coming from light, sound, and sky
Long long ago, a group of light tone day sightseeing to heaven to the earth, because the earth's greedy delicious, no man graceful body, slowly become coarse scale body, so there is no magical powers, the ability to fly, can not return to the light and sound day, slowly turned into a normal human, slowly degraded, such humans struggling to survive in the harsh natural environment, and gradually evolved to keep close, with cultural civilization, I do not know what time can atavistic return cases, large-scale re evolved into heaven. Oh, this is a world, pure land.

What is the evidence for this?

very good.

I saw another post on this early this week, so I had to dive into the paper and dig around a little. It definitely seems less conclusive than advocated by media outlets, they state "we consider four principle alternative interpretations of its phylogenetic position: Graecopithecus is a stem-hominine (last common ancestor of African apes and Homo), a gorillin, a panin, or a hominin." There is no genetic information available as I understand, phylogenic classification is all we've got based on the mandable and such. They clearly state here on of their principle interpretations is that the ancestor is a hominid, gorillin or panin. None of which are an end-all human ancestor. There is lots of evidence to suggest most of the great apes evolved in africa some 10 million years ago, and for now I'll say humans probably were a result of these conditions as well. Might get through all the videos through just to see.

This kind of thing fascinates me. Nothing more interesting that the origin of us all

Hi my name is Maria.Very nice post: -****

It adds far more complexity to the Human origins story and now nobody can be certain just what species to associate with tool creation.

tool creation is subjective and can be developed in parallel with many species. This finding only confirms evolutionary theory even more.

Here our cousins using their environment as a tool

Undoubtedly the root of man incorporates some level of development, creation and panspermia, yet none of the three can give hard and undeniable logical verification that their claim of human cause on earth is right. The theory of exile is the main hypothesis ready to give outright verification to substantiate its claim about of the cause of man.

This post is perfect. Keep laying down some serious nature, @gavvet! - new follower

Love this question "if we came from monkeys, why are there still monkeys" funny everytime!

I like to answer "for the same reason that dogs came from wolves, but wolves are still around".

Out of beautiful Africa or out of beautiful Croatia, that is the question! :D
By the way, this theory is not new. Heard it years ago. It has just been revamped by this new discovery.
Great post, and thank you @gavvet for being my strongest supporter!

absolutely mind blowing videos on origin of homo sapiens :)
Great .... Thank you ... upvoted ^^

Wow such an inspirational post! Going to watch the rest of the videos now! Great topic

resteem and upvote for your post....

I love how passionate this man is about this project he spearheaded in South Africa. Though I think his forensic interpretation of the site was a little off, I believe that if we had a lot more men and women who would get out into the field and make things happen the science would move forward. His forensic analysis of the cave is that it was a burial ground for these hominids. If we look a bit closer at the skeletons appear to have been pressure washed inside the cave as the creature died. The skeletons appear to have been crushed while the creatures were undergoing an increase of atmospheric pressure in the cave that was the precursor to a large amount of water pushed by a cataclysmic high tide. It appears that these were natural bunkers these creatures went to in order to survive storms and that a storm, they could never have prepared adequately for finally got them. That's just my evaluation of some of that amazing content pulled out of the cave. We need to make more amazing discoveries without arguing the merits of our philosophical would views and putting others down for theirs.

He reminds me of Indiana Jones...but without the hat! Cheers @gavvet.

This stuff is so interesting. Awesome post!

What is also interesting is that the intelligence of all the forefathers of the human race is measured according to the skull size. The Neanderthals have a larger skull size than modern homo sapiens, but strangely they are not regarded as more intelligent as homo sapiens. They also found that Europeans have Neanderthal genes which indicate that the Neanderthal and homo sapien of Western Europe lived together and interbred.
Thanks for interesting post.

Intelligence is not always the be all, end all. Homo Sapiens were nearly as smart, but also much more aggressive. Sadly that was an unbeatable combo at the time. I sometimes lament that we did not descend instead from the comparatively peaceful Bonobo. How different society would be.

Good job ! cheers @gavvet

Why am I not surprised that the comment section is riddled with talk of creation > evolution? I'm here like, okaaay, God created us all in his own image. okay? Good? All agree? right , moving on, new topic. Neeeeew topic. Brand new, not even remotely related to what we were speaking of before, you know the creation thing. Brand new topic pertaining to this evidence we have here and what we think about it.

Just fossils ;-)

Great, obsolete but not quite as old yet, great find.

nice videos,@gavvet pleas upvote my post, thanks

I think whatever theory is proven right it will be a great revelation for mankind.

I do know , thank
Nice share

Great to see they found these so they'll get new insights as where we come from.

I appreciate science, but it's surprising how people in the science community get so set in their ideas about the world.

Everyone thought I was crazy in class when I asked questions like "How do we know that rocks do not experience things?"

"How do we know we weren't created by some other species?"

These questions shouldn't be that strange when you consider that we started cloning in the 90's and have been mapping out DNA, but they were, people really thought I had issues.

I try not to go too overboard with theories and treat them like fact but I entertain them and consider them as possibilities and I have my favorite theories, which sounds like a pretty scientific attitude to me, even though I am more of an artist at heart than a scientist.

I love discoveries like this because they force people to question everything.

Surprisingly Good
