The beginning of the evolutionary discovery in Africa.

in science •  7 years ago

In 1911 Professor Wilhelm Kattwinkel, on a medical expedition in the then German East Africa explored the slopes of a ravine in the middle of nowhere.

He collected some ancient fossils and took them back on his return to Germany.

They belonged to a three-toed horse.

The excitement at this discovery led to a dedicated expedition being organised by the Universities of Berlin and Munich, with the Kaisers support, specifically to this tear in the earth on the fringes of the Serengeti plains west of Ngorongoro crater.

Hans Reck was to lead the expedition which found it difficult to find the gorge recorded by Prof. Kattwinkel as Oldoway.

After 3 days searching in the target area they discovered where they had set up camp was in fact the place they were looking for.

Reck proceeded to perform a complete geological survey of the area in the following three months and collected over 1700 fossils.

Nearing the end of the expedition a human skeleton was unearthed surrounded by Pleistocene animal bones. If it was the same age as the animals that surrounded it then it was the oldest human remains yet to be found.

Reck proclaimed to the world that "Oldoway man" had been found.

So, they found tons of fossils and the oldest corpse ever?

I am always fascinated with findings as regards evolution. I wished I could join such expedition. Thank you for sharing.

It's pretty neat what fossils can tell us in these days. Imagine the excitement of finding the oldest known human remains. The discovery of new things never stops.

Nice post.... Please upvote my post...

great inforamtion about geological survey you have shared @gavvet, Serengeti is a geographical region in Africa,The Serengeti hosts the largest terrestrial mammal migration in the world, which helps secure it as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa, and africa always surprised everyone.Reck had really done very wonderful discovery "oldoway man" upvoted and resteemed.Thank you.

You know one time the Serengeti plains stretched all the way to what is now known as the Sahara desert. It crazy how climate change can really change the face of the earth. O once thought of building a pipeline into the desert and letting the sand filter the salt from the water. Until i learned you need energy to remove dissovled materials from water. But nonetheless a Megaproject spanning sahara and sahel nations would put a nice % of unemployed africans to work and generate billions in just land sales after its completion not to mention the money to be made from the crops that would be able to be grown. one can dream :)

wow learning something new

Very nice geological report you maintion , which help to improve our knoledge.

Oh yes, it was a famous expedition and when the first results in the Olduvai Gorge caused a sensation when the German neurologist and paleontologist Professor Wilhelm Katvinckel in 1911 became the first Europeans to enter the gorge after encountering the remains of the long-extinct three horse hurricane (Hipparion). In 1913 the Berlin researcher Hans Rekk followed him and found the first fossil hominin, about 20,000-year-old Homo sapiens skull. Thank you @gavvet

Forget out of Africa! Fossils reveal human farmers migrated BACK to the continent from Europe 3,000 years ago to populate it
The first modern humans are thought to have left Africa and began spreading around the world up to 100,000 years ago, but it seems some of our ancestors later decided to return to the continent.
A new study has revealed evidence of a reverse migration by Stone Age farmers from Europe to Africa which can still be seen today in the genomes of people from Africa.
Two teeth from a 35,000 year old woman discovered in Romania have provided evidence that a population of humans travelled back to Africa around 3,000 years ago.

A genetic study has provided evidence that a population of modern humans migrated from Europe to Africa around 3,000 years ago. The research found genetically material from a 35,000 year old female skull found in the Pestera Muierii cave in Romania matched genes found in modern African populations today

I would love to read about this research you are tAlking about, it will be a great eye opener

It seems fishy to me i will have to do some research on the topic. imvery skeptical but anything is possible and people are mysterious at times.

Great post, very interesting reading, thanks

Thanks for the info. Perfect for me, i've been researching the discovery of Africa for a few years now. I've found some interesting facts. I'm living in South Africa at the moment, from Flint MI.. I've been to the Cradle of Humankind and it was mind blowing. The greatness of Africa is time to be brought to the forefront. It's actually kind of funny , that Africa's story has been buried, and now being unearthed. World stand back, the Diamond in the rough is rising!! in Love, and Awareness... H

Thanks jblack! keep the knowledge going. will be checking for ya new posts. one love.H

It's realy Good post..👌

I always read your post because I find it very informative. There is still much more about evolution yet to be discovered and I believe africa holds more information than the other continents.

It is about making you think from a different perspective..
It is about writing without any expectations of UPVOTES..
Excellent post good analyses thanks for sharing.

Forty years ago in east Africa, a team of scientists found a fossil that changed our understanding of human evolution

The Taung Child (Credit: The Natural History Museum, London)
Regardless of the way that she was another species, Lucy was not the principle Australopithecus found. That was the Taung Child, the fossilized skull of a young tyke who lived around 2.8 million years back in Taung, South Africa. The Taung Child was found in 1924 and was considered by anatomist Raymond Dart. He comprehended that it had a place with another creature classifications, which he called Australopithecus africanus.

and then what happened?

thanks sir for the educative post of science
that awsome
thanks to you

@gavvet Thanks for information.this is an event that will change human history.

Nice, lost historical relics have returned

There is always something to learn in your posts ! Thanks for that !

first thing that comes to my mind after hearing "middle of nowhere" is courage the cowardly dog show :) memories of my childhood. Btw great post, i guess they were lucky enough to find what they were looking for in just 3 days :)

Nice post...

A really nice post. eagerly dragging while reading

Yes amazing and interesting post.lovely way of explaining evalutionary discovery.Love this kind of posts.Keep it up brO.

and this is great discover in africa..well done..

Thanks information and sharing. It's interesting

great post👍

really its an inteligents post because you pick off in your post about science topic in africka and one things i like very much that is your photograohy is looks very charming.

Wow I love history and when we discover new facts that give us more answers.

that's a great discovery,wonderful

Wawww amazing
Good post and i like it

extraordinary

this place is great for research. and I think here has been inhabited by humans thousands of years ago. thanks @gavvet for the information.

Thanks for giving me subject to explore. I'm new in Steemit and finding a post like your one giving me hope that staying here more interesting. I'm a Archeologist and Prehistorian. Love subject of anthropology and archeology. Upvoted :) small but from my heart.

This is good news
Old world remains are hard to find but exciting :)
@gavvet

oh, that's an interesting discovery, 1700 fossils. they are way too much .
Any further discovery regarding this topic ?

What was the estimated age of the animals in the area?

I am a fan of discovery. I really liked this amazing discovery which gives explanations and analyzes about ancient African man and the ancient fossils of this continent full of wonders. Thank you brother for this analysis and the wonderful post.i just upvoted and resteemed.

All these discoveries are still Africa bears a lot of facts and mystery is not yet discovered, this discovery increases studies on the origin of African men, especially Oldoway man

Hmmmm....never knew all along but these fossils found of animal bones are they still in existence or they are extinct because we will only know how decade that location is with the search on the fossils of animal found

Oh yes, more of this please. Its incredible the explosion of finds at the turn of the century

Hmmm, i have never come accross this study as a grographer, i shall though make more researchon your write up. So are ypu telling me that yhe oldest skull was found in 1911 by willm katthinkel?

I don't know, first I heard about this, and looking it up you find this

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oldowan

Homo sapiens is much newer than these guys, they've been around for a while apparently.

Very nice geologic,, please come back to my blog and upvote

It is the best stuff i have read.
Fossils are very essential and are non-renewable that will be converted into fossil fuel.

Really good post, would love to see a picture of the place where they camped

this is 1st article i am reading about geology on steemit :) you have nicely written it.keep it up..i like to read more on it :)

Woww nice post.. please upvote my post👍

good post brother

Hi I'm Adriana Della Pietra (@adrianadp), i'm really inderested in science and i'd like to have a science blog exactly as you. Really great article!

Thanks for posting this @gavvet. All I knew about the Olduvai Gorge was linked to Louis Leakey. Til know I thought he was the first to discover the fossil records there. My knowledge has been expanded and now I now about the Gorge pre-Leakey - thanks

nice pos buddy

its all here in africa ....sadly iam from egypt and more sadly that iam from africa

Nice

keep going ! ilike it

You wrote an interesting story, super! Goodjob

Wow,i hope to see this someday

As an amature bone collector, this is pretty amazing stuff. I sure wish I could visit this place in the Serengeti. 🐓🐓
