Where do animal hibernation and fallen leaves really come from.

in science •  7 years ago

Since some animals hibernate in winter and many trees lose their leaves in winter, I guess its easy for us to assume that these behaviors developed in response to the colder, less productive season of the year.

As I have been delving into a lot on paleoclimates in deep geological time another, also likely, factor raised its head.

Much of what we see around us, in the form of plants and animals living today, only begins to emerge in the time of the Dinosaurs and much later.

The time of the dinos, from a couple of million years ago to about 70 million years ago was very, very, did I say very? different.

For instance there was no grass early on ... Imagine that, mainly conifers and ferns with only flowering plants and some grass making their appearance or becoming dominant only towards the end of the dinos in the Cretaceous Period.

Climate was also extremely different then. The tropics would have been unbearably hot and humid by our standards and there was little or no ice at the poles.

Fossil evidence shows that the poles were heavily forested, the climate there would not require today's polar gear and was incredibly mild by comparison. Plants and animals would have been able to go about their lives at the poles much like they did over the rest of the planet.

There would be one significant difference though, that could not be mitigated by favorable climate and an extremely humid atmosphere.

The poles have perpetual sunlight and daytime in summer and perpetual night in winter.

It would be pretty useless and energy expensive for a tree to maintain its canopy of photosynthesizing leaves through the three or more month long night of the polar winter.

Natural selection would have favored emerging species that conserved energy by shedding their leaves and going dormant during these long dark nights.

Conifers that had emerged long before the flowering plants and deciduous trees were already well selected and "set in their genetic ways" so less likely to evolve in this direction.

But the emerging species would have easily passed these genetic capabilities onto their descendants. Similarly hibernation and other dormancy capabilities would have been favored in animal species and have been passed down.

I think its safe to assume that, hibernation and other forms of low activity or dormancy in both the animal and vegetable kingdom not only evolved in response to lower temperatures and less productive seasons but also the months long cycles of perpetual darkness found at vast periods of the geological past when temperate species emerged, lived and thrived at the poles of the earth.

I have 4 plastic dinosaurs on my drawing desk (i've been painting dino footprints) as I'm reading this. They said your article was very interesting.

A creature that i find fascinating is the Spadefoot toad. It can stay underground in a state of suspended animation for years, surviving extreme heats.

Hahahaahaha, maybe they are smoking Spadefoot toad-skin 😆

What are dino's smoking?

They are mainly inhaling mercury laced volcanic gas clouds... passive smoking of course.

I'm so grateful @gavvet thank you so much sir for the opportunity to learn from you

Is there not also a species of frog that freezes over the winter periods and defrosts for the spring? Pretty cool creatures!

Gracias @ gavvet
Es un post genial, yo amo la paleoarqueología desde niño.
Tu hipótesis me parece viable e interesantes.

I was born in the far North, in the Arctic circle and lived there for 18 years. Polar night in my area lasted for 40 days, every year.

Despite the fact that both my parents are southerners and they came to the North as young, they could not fully adapt to such a severe and unusual climate.

People who come to the North at a Mature age begin to experience serious health problems already on 2-3rd year: allergic reactions to cold, the constant pressure surges, your teeth begin to break down, not to mention the mental health. The lack of light in winter and its constant presence in the summer it is a serious test for the psyche.

I am a first generation northerner in our family and withstand local environmental conditions without problems. The polar night has no harmful effects on my body and I can live without vitamins, my waking cycle is quite extensive.

Sounds like you are a good case of epigenetics then! thanks for sharing your experience with arctic darkness.

Now I live in a middle climatic zone. So I'm curious will my children, born here, retain the genetic characteristics of my body, which will allow them to live normally in the far North.

After all I'm only a first generation northerner. And most likely my genetic mutations are not so stable to so easily move to the next generation.

Your parents likely have whatever you have as will your children, but in this case without the stimulation very early on in development and childhood those genes will not likely be turned on in the same way they were in your case.

The DNA has not changed, simply how it is expressed in certain individuals based on external stimuli at a crucial time during development.

Of course you are right about the fact that DNA will not be lost. And I also tend to believe that without stimulants in the early stages of a child's development, the body's unnecessary abilities will simply be suppressed.

Thank you for this dialogue!

Great post..but i would to know if "Could Humans Hibernate?"

We could not. Although, as seen in many experiments, we can spend a lot of time, months, without eating (only drinking water), provided that we have enough bodyfat for energy demands. Should one do it? I'd say no, unless under strict medical supervision.

This is highly unlikely, because there are no primates that hibernate. And our species originated in warm climates. When our ancestors migrated to colder regions, they underwent some genetic changes, the most notable one being pale skin to allow for more UV absorption abd adequate vitamin D synthesis, and very likely by the time they (and the Neanderthals as well) reached the Northern latitudes, they already were efficient tool users and skilled hunters and they made clothes. They would have had no reason to undergo a massive evolutionary change in so many systems, to evolve the capability to hibernate from scratch. Let alone lose it afterwards.

I would say this depends of your definition of “hibernate.” Early man likely spent 20–23.5 hours a day in his home, cave, or den during the coldest parts of the winter. Imagine how cold it was not having layers of clothing especially designed for warmth. Think how cold your feet would get without thick layers of soft socks and commercial footwear. You don’t even have to go back to prehistoric man, even in the 1800’s, many families would bundle up and sleep 14–16 hours a day, or at least severely limit their activity, because it was dark and in many parts of the world, uncomfortably cold.

Yes, there has been a big change in the world
We hope that tomorrow will be better and together we will protect this world to live under the banner of peace

Dont play with nature. It has its own cycle.

its amazing when you think about the transformation that has taken place in our world since the time of the dinosaurs and it makes one wonder what will really become of planet earth with all these recent climate changes.

Very nice work.

Life is straight lines stretched out so far that they become spirals, like DNA. As above, so below, as before, so now.

I think that this is quite realistic, it can now where the realties, where the permafrost after global warming, develops and what life begins to emerge, whether that plant or animal, etc.

Thanks my friend for this amazing subject regarding the age of dinosaurs

Theme important is no longer الكتير athdt him thank you very much

Lovely piece @gavvet, with respect to hibernation, Certain animal species have evolved an adaptation that allows them to weather long stretches of time when food is scarce — they enter a state known as hibernation. And what happens when an animal hibernates is much more dramatic than simply curling up for an extended nap; extreme metabolic changes are taking place. The animal's heart and breathing rates slow down, and its body temperature drops. Depending on the species, days or even weeks may pass without the animal waking to drink, eat or relieve itself.

You are absolutely right that some animal organisms and plants were able to adapt and survive in extreme low temperatures was the result of evolution and the ability to reduce body temperature, thereby saving energy. For example, this ability is possessed by various kinds of snakes. Thank you @gavvet

Truly speaking, how Do Animals Spend the Winter? animals The weather gets colder, days get shorter and leaves turn color and fall off the trees. Soon, winter is here. Snow covers the ground. People live in warm houses and wear heavy coats outside. Our food comes from the grocery store. But what about animals? nice post there, upvoted

Nice post @gavvet. The topic of prehistoric animals is a really interesting one. Bone analysis from dinosaurs that once lived in the Antarctic Circle suggests the animals did not hibernate, hence showing that hibernation had a more recent origin.

Very nice topic on evolution of animalistic characters you've got there. According to some studies, dinosaurs living in the intense cold and months-long darkness of the South Pole were once thought to hibernate during the winter months just to survive. Although, that old theory has been put on ice.

Truly I concur, it was amid the sleeping time of most earth creatures that the ice age started, where we have the distinctive types of lion with tusk and another advancement of elephants and interesting creatures,

Be that as it may, by all methods something most kick the bucket for a remark that is the quintessence of life in continuation of the cycle.

Astonishing work @gavvet it's been a while

Good post! Dinosaurs are real, confirmed!

I also believe there were much higher levels of atmospheric oxygen which allowed the support for such large organisms! (just a fun aside note)

That has taken place in our world since the time of the dinosaurs and it makes one wonder what will really become of planet earth with all these recent climate changes. I guess somehow it is all related as it happens according to changes in weather. @gavvet

awesome post . i still wish a saw a Dinosaurs though

good post,, best information

Yeah. There has to be adaptation for a chance of survival in our ever changing world.

At us in the winter before-20 degrees was, and now -1 soon the heat will be

Great post bro, always follow your post.

It makes sense. The environment has always played (plays and will always play) a crucial role in Natural Selection and I wouldn't be surprised if these ancient plants and animals could only lower their metabolic rate just enough to endure long periods of cold or darkness; obviously, these would survive and produce descendants capable of facing the same conditions as their parents. In evolutionary time, these features would improve and voilà, now we have hibernating bears and dormant seeds, for example :)

Tulisan yang bagus ....

Yes I agree, it was during the hibernating period of most earth animals that the ice age began, where we have the different species of lion with tusk and another evolution of elephants and strange animals,

However, by all means something most die for something to live that is the essence of life in continuation of the cycle.

Amazing work @gavvet it's been a while

Good one boss, we will have learn and understand the world we live in

Your perspective on evolution and climate seems very reasonable to me. Even now we have insects and other creatures that are only active after a certain number of years. As humans some are better suited for cooler darker climates and others for hot.

good friend. very amazing

Cold blooded animals like fish, frogs, snakes and turtles have no way to keep warm during the winter. Snakes and many other reptiles find shelter in holes or burrows, and spend the winter inactive, or dormant. This is similar to hibernation.

@gavvet

@gavvet Animals and plants have to adapt to the changing environments else face extinction. Is it possible that the meteorite that ended the Cretaceous era terraformed the earth to what it is now?

ahmmnm awesome keep posting....
and also upvote me thanks.....

Very interesting post! I always love to read about nature and animals! Upvoted! :)

That's very educative post @gavvet. Amazing to tell that, after the 70 million years changed the planet more. I guess All things happened with changing different climate. The cause of the mass extinction that marks the end of the dinosaurs and the beginning of the dinosaurs is a scientific mystery. But I guess it was happen change climate. The times of the dinosaurs, had favorable climate. So they could stay live. But after Either scenario would have choked the skies with debris that starved the Earth of the sun's energy, throwing a wrench in photosynthesis and sending destruction up and down the food chain. Then Animal's couldn't find foods for their live. Then after animals was dead. I think and heard these reason. All of changed under the winter and summer weather condition. Thank you for scientific conversation.

Interesting. Cycles seem to influence us in more ways than we can imagine.

Good post man overall . @gavvet

Well i guess we should ask the biologists.

Interesting post

It's very informative article.
I'll show my brother to this article and it will be great support for his advance level project.

Am now your fan, i just followed you. All your content are inspiring . i love them, make sure you keep doing the good works.

wow nice

Hibernation if only humans possess this ability then it could make our lives last longer. For sure we can live hundreds of years if we can hibernate! That would br very interesting!

It's still very unclear how those dinosaurs disappeared and how they were born or where did they came from in the first place. Science has a lot of explanation to do because it seems the fairy tale about it is getting vague.

Perhaps you need to do some more reading of what science actually says and not what some people say about science.

According my short study, i came to know that our whole universe is the result of several cosmic events. I am not sure it's true or not but i read it.

Have a great day and stay blessed.

I agree with your last ascertion "
I think its safe to assume that, hibernation and other forms of low activity or dormancy in both the animal and vegetable kingdom not only evolved in response to lower temperatures and less productive seasons but also the months long cycles of perpetual darkness found at vast periods of the geological past when temperate species emerged, lived and thrived at the poles of the earth"

i like the analysis. i do always wonder if the dinosaurs disappeared, they should at least left something similar to them? i mean looking like them which can at least explain their existence....climate and seasonal change played also a big part as it does right now.

When we ask our grand fathers about their perception of the world, their ultimate answer will be'' you know my son things have change, it's not like those days'' i mean we no longer live the same era.

Then, what should we tell to the future generation???? What are the species that are soon desappearing due to climate change??? i do not know much about climate change, but surely, the next generation won't be the same like the present, and various species and animal varieties may desappear in the nearer future time.

my view.

Thanks gavvet for this good information .the worlds nature is keep on changing.

Very interesting facts. I like it a lot. Thanks for sharing. It is hard to imagine how earth looked like back then.

Well explained how to animal hibernation before long years. Currently anything changed on the planet since those years to now. Currently climate changed unbelievably. All takes responsibilities humans. Natural disaster suffered the time of the dinosaurs those days and now suffer to humans. All to d nature I think.

sometimes I want to hibernate too :D

natural selection is cruel, who is the strong, he can survives.
in winter if your stomach is not full enough, death will come over when you fall asleep.

Great analysis. That's the kind of things i think about when I'm really high and watching Planet Earth or something that makes me question "how it got to this".

I'd like to identitfy how crazy our universe is. Everything started from simplicity, and by multiplying itself with itself, on bigger and bigger scales, we finished with a planet with an ecosystem with millions of different multi cellular species fucking about for survival. And then there's us smoking "illegal" grass to forget about our daily lives and the complexity and negativity coming out of our societies.. Tough stuff ain't it haha

I agree with your opinion about this evolutionary process, because the evolutionary process that occurred millions of years ago is one of the processes to balance the status of this world that is now old

Great post, very interessting!

its super while you reflect onconsideration on the transformation that has taken area in our international since the time of the dinosaurs and it makes one marvel what's going to absolutely emerge as of planet earth with some of these latest weather modifications.

@Upvote and @Resteem

Great post.!glad you shared this

so , do fishes hibernate in winter too ?

Yes, times were definitely different back then you also have to factor in hunting and humans now. That has alot to do with mass extinction as a whole, it may be fun to hunt game. But being that hunting isn't our only source of food now it wouldn't be ideal or smart to continue doing that.

very nice and informative post.
i just resteem it.
@qami

What a good post, very deep and at the same time it is very specific, thanks for this topic, the nature and the change of the same during the time is impressive but just as characters have been maintained with the passage of time it is also

I was Thinking to write a post about hibernation,

yes, the dinosaurs have disappeared as a result of all these changes in the climate ... the answer to the question of why dinosaurs disappear has been sketched for years. In all likelihood, the answer to this question will never be fully given. A brief, but drastic change in the climate that seems to be the most logical answer to this question. Besides this, both natural and space-related disasters are being put forward ...

wow friend, I love the cold, but I do not know if I could live like hehehe I loved your publication, a hug @gavvet

thats very informative article.
thanks #gavvet for sharing such useful article

Human too have abality to hibernate but it is too much passive.

Wonderful information and knowledge. The human civilization and the climatic conditions have been constantly in change and will be. This topic is a little difficult for me but I do find it interesting to know.

As I read your post, I became impressed with the fish that live in the mud without water. the fish is called Lungfish "Protopterus sp" they live in the dry season and when it rains they move back and live again ,,

[Source]

there's actually a mechanism that starts the leaf dropping process. Cold weather stimulates the release of ABA (abcisic(sp) acid) which then ceases production of the chlorophyllic pigments resulting in the beautiful leaf colors we see in the fall. As far as the other discussions on winter's ill effects on the body, as a native Floridian who is right now writing this from a camper in Wyoming, I say look at increasing your uptake of D3 dramatically. It has mood altering properties and if you look at the disease rates for all the major killers, the rates are lower the closer you get to the equator.

wonderful post

I have learnt a lot from your write up. Its so inspiring @gavvet

Everything is going to the end...

Very informative blog indeed and its giving a thought why is there winter? It's time to take a pause from over speeding of evolving to change.

It provides species to energize and start from a new with renewed energy.

Thank you for sharing a wonderful information.

Let us assume you are right. How about organisms that hibernate due to high temperature or other unfavourable conditions apart from cold? I would like to read your views on them.
