  • Alison Teal initially thought it was a rock after tripping over it.
  • But it turned out to be an extremely rare Triceratops jaw bone.

Triceratops lived from 68 to 66 million years ago, in the Cretaceous period.

So how is it 65 million years if it was at the surface for her to trip on?

Let me quote from Chicago University Fossils 101:

That's right, the only way for those sediments to reach the surface is for them to be pushed up during the process of mountain making and then worn away by the forces of erosion. Hard to imagine? It's happening all the time.
