There is a Likelihood Snake May Grow Limbs as they Have the Genes to do so

For those with ophidiophobic (from ophiophobia is the irrational/abnormal fear of snakes) this piece of information may not be a good one for you. Imagine waking up to snakes on legs? Scary right?

National Geographic: Tetrapodophis catching a lizard.

About 150 million years ago, snakes used to have four limbs. The tetrapodophis which translate to four-footed snake in Greek roamed Brazil with the dinosaurs. But some genetic mutation caused the reptiles to lose their legs.

But snakes have the gene to grow legs. The gene is referred to as the Sonic Hedgehog Gene. This gene was so-named due to the hedgehog-like spines seen on embryos during the start of limb development. How the gene got Sonic to its name is an intriguing one.

One of the researchers in the Harvard lab, Robert Riddle, working on the first cloning of the Sonic Hedgehog gene got the name from a comic book that the daughter had during the time of paper was being published. The Sonic The Hedgehog was a 1991 Sega game.

The Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) gene is important in the development of limbs as it acts like a motor that controls the development of limbs. The SHH gene is also behind the tiny claw-like objects that could be seen on a python's skin.

How Snake Lost Their Legs

A journal published in October of 2016 Loss and Re-emergence of Legs in Snakes by Modular Evolution of Sonic hedgehog and HOXD Enhancers showed that mutation in the Zone of Polarizing Activity Regularity Sequence or ZRS is a snake DNA responsible for the limb-altering change.

They ran a clinical trial where this ZRS DNA was removed from mice embryos and had it replaced by snake's own. The mice were found to have difficulty/inability to grow limbs. This result indicates that ZRS is important in the development of limbs according to the researchers.

"This is one of many components of the DNA instructions needed for making limbs in humans and, essentially, all other legged vertebrates. In snakes, it's broken," the study's senior author Axel Visel, a geneticist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in CaliforniaSource

There is a sort of enhancer or switch if you may, that controls the SHH gene to either be on or off. In snakes, this switch due to mutation is on "off" position preventing limb development.

There are moments there is a flicker and there is an "on" moment and that is when we see the development of such "claws" (pseudo-limbs) in the underbelly of some pythons.

This means we are likely looking at the possibility of having snakes with a limb without an entire evolutionary circle. Scary right? Share your thoughts below.

Sonic?? I am feeling young again :D

That was 1991...long ago :) Thanks a lot.

...Let that day never come!

Damn!
@greenrun .... They are scary enough as they are, already
Imagine running away from something slippery and with legs too?
Who knows, that could even lead to some further weird mutation and we would be talking about snakes with wings?
Nope! I don't want to behold that metamorphosis, at all.

Fun fact: snakes are not slippery, fishes are. Snake's skin feels like leather or plastic :)

You killed me with this gif. lmao! @rickie

For real I will join you in a prayer of agreement @rickie that they never grow legs lol.

This is awesome, so snakes have legs before. Though i don't like snakes. Thanks for sharing this

It would be the wierdest thing to see snakes growing legs. But your article did justice. Good one @greenrun

Thanks @turpsy. You rock.

that's a scary post ;p

Really?

Thanks for posting well researched and educative post @greenrun

Thanks for reading.

This is scary tho, imagine snakes with legs, terribly deadly

I didn't know a limb makes it deadlier.

nice posting

Thanks

most welcome

Well researched information. Nice one.

Thanks for reading.

All i know is snakes scare me shitless.

Welcome to the club :)

This post has received gratitude of 1.00 % from @jout

Thanks a lot.

I think I have ophiophobia, I just get pissed off from the sight. Please I pray they remain without legs.

Most people here have that same phobia. So, you are not alone. Thanks

They called it the "Sonic The Hedgehog" gene???

lol wut

That goes to show you that scientists can be that cool kid we all love to hang out with in high school :)

I am very amused to see the snake

That's good to see. You like snakes?

no. I am very afraid of snakes

@greenrun lookin at the snake alone, i feel uncomfortable.
This your post is really weird because intially snake are more dangerous without legs, a snake with four limb will make the creature more dangerous beyond normal.
Any one that come across this kind of creature goes no where.

I'm weird :)

Lol

Hahahaha this is the last creature I want to see. Abeg let it stay without legs o

Let nature decide.

Chisos! We'll prolly be dead by then tho

Do you think it'd make it more dangerous?

It'll definitely make it look more dangerous

Abeg o, snakes with legs...Naah mahn, that might give me Hbp. I'm def ophidiophobic.

You have such phobia for snakes? Well, that is interesting 😸

Bro, I do o

nice post, but it may take them time to do soo, legs? its very rear.

It is a possibility that it may happen.

They must not have limb again, snakes are the animal a hate the most

People have that phobia for it.

This day will never ever come AMEN!!

Let's hope so
