A group of scientists has successfully carried out the world's first head transplant. Performed over 18 hours, the operation was led by Harbin Medical University's Dr. Xiaoping Ren who has previously overseen similar experiments on rodents and a monkey.

Although the surgery was carried out on a corpse, scientists are positive that they can now carry out a similar operation on a living patient. The corpse belonged to Valery Spiridonov, a 30-year-old man who volunteered due to his terminal illness.

For their next venture, the scientists wish to swap the paralyzed body of a living human with that of a dead donor to help the patient gain mobility again.
