Behind the Beauty Standards

in science •  6 years ago

The following post is intended to promote a discussion about beauty standards. A theme that has been increasingly massified and highlighted in humanity. How and when did the concept of beauty standards begin to exist?

One possible explanation for such a complex question is that patterns of beauty are part of something natural to the human being. Once homo sapiens came into existence and was perpetuated in society, it became necessary to establish patterns of beauty according to what was "desired," that is, what was expected to be perpetuated for the descendants and the future. In addition, another factor that contributes to the construction of these patterns of beauty are the biological characteristics that have helped and helped homo sapiens to survive. A perfect reflection of this is the Venus of Willendorf, one of the earliest records of mankind on a reference to beauty, estimated to have been carved between 28,000 and 25,000 years before Christ. It is believed that the opulent and plentiful forms of women were factors greatly desired by societies, as they were more conducive to gestations in hostile and uncertain conditions, it is worth remembering that the search for food was something much more difficult in ancient times than today.

Right, understanding a supposed origin helps us through this complex reflection on what we know today. But why and how did the existing standards of beauty settle? Ultimately, what we see when we open the instagram or watch a Holywood movie is very different from the Venus of Willendorf ... What I can not say if it is something positive or not! Because the number of adolescents and women who suffer from anorexia and other eating disorders does not stop growing. At the end of the day, what are we looking for? Why does the fashion industry keep on encouraging people to look for bodies like these?

What do you think of this kind of standardization of beauty, I would really like to know what the Steem community thinks about it?

Thank you and a hug to everyone!

Beauty Is In The Eye Of The Beholder

Wise quote my friend!! @trigabytesteemit

Well, humans are the only species gaga over mammary glands. It always amazes me to find what people find beautiful. I would say that one component of beauty is derived from the health parameters. Now that part makes sense, because mating with someone healthy equals to healthy offspring. The other part is derived from social perception. Like kind of peer pressure. Because social agreement will get you more peers and for humans the grouping is important. This is the part the fashion industry encash on. Now there could be a thrid part to beauty. Feeling the awe when you see aura lights for instance. But why would looking at a malnourished homo sapiens female make anyone feel awe? So that doesn't make sense either. Only thing I can think of for the beauty in question here is social agreement on beauty. And it is weird that men trying to have standards on what to find beautiful because they are not even that choosy naturally when it comes to mating preferences. I can't think of a good reason for sexy daughter hypothesis, the counterpart of sexy son hypothesis.

A good example of social pressure is also skin colour. For instance for a long albino kids were looked upon as evil in some African tribes. Then about 8000 years ago as genes for white skin swiped through Europe, there was a reversal in what colour they found beautiful. Now a part of that can be attributed to advantage of being white in cold artic regions. But finding the same thing beautiful in topical regions like India is what fairness skin cream companies encash on. And the social pressure is once again manufactured by popular idea perpetuated by those who benefit from it.

Like what the hell has skin colour to do with dream job of being a good reporter or TV anchor. But watch this ad
