Your computer has a cool new project it can work on while you watch TV or sleep!
The Microbiome Immunity Project hopes to use volunteer computing to study the role gut bacteria play in diseases such as diabetes. Learn more at the video below!
If you are new to the topic of volunteer computing, I have several posts on it and you can also explore #boinc or #gridcoin. In short, your computer or Android device can boost research on a wide range of topics including astrophysics, cancer, SETI, Zika, prime numbers, and much more. Hundreds of thousands of people are already participating and you could too! You can also get rewarded with #Gridcoin for your efforts.
While a lot of the projects available through BOINC excite me, none are quite as cool as the ones on World Community Grid.
The applications are incredibly far reaching, the researchers behind it are well-published and respected in their fields, and the research is at the bleeding edge of biomedicine.
To add to that, it is one of the few projects that runs very well programmed blocks of work and clean work batches. Probably because IBM sets some very high standards to get a project into WCG. This stands in stark contrast to some other projects that run ill-thought-out work endlessly until they think of something else.
WCG deserves more of our attention.

WCG is great, and it is one of the most popular projects on #gridcoin, which just goes to show it's highly valued.

Yep WCG for the win ! Somtimes the connection to Big Blue is somehow strange to me, but yeah well they at least ensure very high standards and yeah the research is really on the edge of technology in their respective field. Additionally it runs on almost any machine even on tablets running android :)

Yep! I've struggled with that a bit myself. With the IBM connection, it sometimes seems like, well IBM could just donate a huge amount of computing power or a few million bucks and get this research done, but at the same time, they are making a big difference by helping spread the word on volunteer computing and by supporting such an incredible platform that makes it attractive and easy for people to contribute to great projects. The incredible potential of projects like Clean Energy Project are hard to comprehend.

I think they do donate a lot but there is only so much one company can do. Better to get all the ants from all over the world working on it.

Totally agree, all my hosts crunch WCG.
Can we have +20% mag increase for WCG researchers in the next mandatory :-)
