Hello Dear Steemians!!

Welcome to the second episode of Accidental Mighty Discoveries in which we will talk about the story behind the most impactful accidental discoveries that has changed the way we live today.

Earlier in my 1st episode, we had talked about the discovery of Penicillin and some basic things about it.

Today, in continuation to the series, we will be talking about another discovery, the most popular cold drink on the planet that we can buy anywhere, COCA-COLA.

How many among us have not tasted or even got hold of a chilled bottle of COCA-COLA?? Barely one. Coca-cola has been here from the beginning of time. It is still the world's most enjoyed refreshment beverage of all time. But, Do you know the drink that we enjoy the most still to this date was discovered accidentally?

Coca-Cola was invented in the year 1886 at Atlanta by an American pharmacist, John Stith Pemberton.
In the year 1885, Pemberton became wounded during the Battle of Columbus, due to which he got addicted to morphine. This addiction led him to research and experiment on painkillers that would serve as an opium free alternatives to cure his addiction. His experiments led him to eventually create a syrup recipe out of coca leaves and coca wines naming the product Pemberton's French Wine coca. Later on, in 1886, due to legislative prohibition, a non alcoholic version of french coca wine was introduced. This is what we call COCA-COLA today. (Image credit-wikipedia)

TIME LINE OF COCA-COLA

The same year

  • The syrup recipe was first served mixed with carbonated water for five cents at Soda Fountain.
  • This new drink was named Coca-Cola by Frank Robinson, accountant of Dr. Pemberton. And its now famous trademark was created by him in his own handwriting.

 In 1888,

  • He sold the secret formula to Asa Candler, a businessman and a marketing genius who later formed corporation to produce and distribute coca-cola and came up with countless and creative ways to promote the syrup.
  • This is when the syrup was distributed in red barrels to give them a distinctive appearance.

In 1891,
  • For years after serving only in soda fountains, two clever gentlemen, Thomas and Whitehead proposed to bottle the syrup with carbonated water.
  • This whole idea of bottling made the product to reach another height of popularity and became the future of Coca-cola i.e how we get coca-cola nowadays.
  • In 1916,

    • Due to immense popularity of coca-cola, the competitors had tried to cash in the success of it with similar looking products in similar looking bottles.
    • This was when, a unique contour bottle was introduced which became instantly famous.

    In 1919,

    • Candler sold the company of a group of investors and Robert Woodruff was the new president of the company.

Under his leadership, the bottling plants were established all over the world and Coca-cola became the first truly global brand.

But still the secret formula of coca-cola is closely guarded.

With time, coca-cola tried to answer the need of refreshments in many different forms and flavors.

I like the post but Coke changes their formula at some point because of the coca plant. It made people addictive .

That initially happened due to legislative prohibition.. recently too, it is said that they chnged their formula. As i was only mentioning about its discovery and a little overview, i didnt mention all the things :)..
