the earliest history of the name "mercedes" as the car brand name

dated 23 june 1902, car maker daimler-motoren-gesselschaft (dmg) for the first time registered "mercedes" as a brand name. the story begins when gottlieb daimler starts selling cars and sets up dmg in cannstatt, germany. interested in the development of automotive, diplomat and businessman austria, emil jellinek, ordering cars to daimler in 1897.

daimler proposed a two-cylinder powered six-horsepower. however, the vehicle was deemed too slow by jillinek, so he ordered a faster model, a four-horsepower daimler phoenix. Later, jellinek sold a daimler-made vehicle and drove it in a nice week race in 1899. He followed the race under the pseudonym "mercedes" taken from his eldest daughter's name. when dmg sold a new four-cylinder vehicle, in 1900, jellinek proposed the vehicle was called mersedes.
