Hey Steemians! I try not to do too much sharing of other links here like I would on FB or Twitter, because I don't want to annoy folks, but this was just really amazing to me and if it comes into use, could mean a lot of lives saved.

Basically, these researchers have discovered a way to remove the sugars in blood that makes different types incompatible, essentially making all blood into the universal O-. They used gut bacteria that will use up the sugars to remove them (type O- doesn't have any of the sugars, which is why it is the universal donor type, because it's the sugars that the body reacts to and rejects if they're the wrong kind). So this could mean no blood shortages, because they can turn everyone's donation into one that can be used by everyone else. Imagine how many lives could be saved!
It still has to pass safety testing and I'm sure trials and whatnot, so it's not going to be in use probably any time soon. But it's a great discovery, so I just had to share!

I did not read any of the referenced articles, but it seems to me if a person has a certain blood type then that is the type they should have. I know they use O type as a universal type, but that is lacking something the AB A B blood type people likely need. Removing something and making it easy to just give out fixed/manufactured O type blood to everyone I do not believe will work in the long run.
Are there any studies that show recovery time of patients that received their pre-stored blood, vs donated correct blood type for them, vs receiving O type blood because nothing else was available?
If I had any blood type other than O type I would be very very concerned with this.
