Hiccups happen to practically everyone from time to time, even cats and rats get hiccup!
Till this day, even doctors don't know the real reason of hiccups and nor do they know how to make them go away!
Some say you get it when you ate too quickly, got too excited or drank something carbonated, but these are not proven by science!
In other words, hiccup remains largely a mystery!
But still we do have theories on causes and cures as well as home remedies!
Let's have some fun discovering some of these theories!!!
Causes and Remedies of hiccups!!!
Before we start looking in the causes, please note that hiccups are rarely a cause to be concerned about! But if it becomes chronic and persistent which ultimately affect sleeping patterns or interfere with eating etc... see a doctor!
Here are some causes that are usually associated with having hiccups!
Chewing gum/smoking causes you to swallow air and you can end up with the hiccups!
Babies may hiccup after crying or coughing and this is common in babies in the first year!
Some medications that can cause acid reflux may also have hiccups as a side effect.
Eating too fast as you can swallow air along which ultimately trigger hiccups.
Eating fatty foods or drinking too much alcohol or carbonated drinks.
Stress and anxiety too can induce short and long term hiccups.
Before looking at some remedies, according to Guinness World Records, the longest recorded bout of intractable hiccups occurred in an American man who hiccupped constantly for 68 years from 1922 to 1990!
Hic!!! Hic!!! Hic!!!
It stopped only 1 year before he died!
People have very interesting interventions: scare me, hurt me, tickle me, drink for 90 seconds, drink upside down for 90 seconds, but these aren't based in science at all!
Let's have a look at some common home remedies for this mystery bodily function!
You can try these methods at home to get rid of the hiccups, they are not harmful but funny:
Place 1/2 tsp of dry sugar on the back of the tongue and repeat this process 3 times!
Quickly drink a glass of water! If it does not stop, try the next one!
Hold your breath for some seconds! Still not working?
Pull hard on your tongue! Go slowly pls!
Or have someone frighten you!
Smelling salts is a cure too!
Do you hiccup oftenly?
What are the remedies you use normally?
